1 Agriculture An Introductory Reader
STEINER, RUDOLF, VON ARNIM, C.
1855841134 / 9781855841130 2003 Paperback
Rudolf Steiner, the often undervalued, multifaceted genius of modern times, contributed much to the regeneration of culture. In addition to his philosophical teachings, he provided ideas for the development of many practical activities including education -- both general and special -- agriculture, medicine, economics, architecture, science, religion, and the arts. Today there are thousands of schools, clinics, farms, and many other organizations based on his ideas.Steiner's original contribution to human knowledge was based on his ability to conduct spiritual research, the investigation of metaphysical dimensions of existence. With his scientific and philosophical training, he brought a new systematic discipline to the field, allowing for conscious methods and comprehensive results. A natural seer from childhood, he cultivated his spiritual vision to a high degree, enabling him to speak with authority on previously veiled mysteries of life.Topics include: the evolving human being; cosmos as the source of life; plants and the living earth; farms and the realms of nature; bringing the chemical elements to life; soil and the world of spirit; supporting and regulating life processes; spirits of the elements; nutrition and vitality; responsibility for the future.

Archetypal Plant, The Rudolf Steiner’s Watercolour Painting, LORD, ANGELA
3 Archetypal Plant, The Rudolf Steiner’s Watercolour Painting
LORD, ANGELA
1906999856 / 9781906999858 2015
Rudolf Steiner painted his Archetypal Plant watercolour in 1924, at a time when contemporary scientific methodologies were emerging and nature was being examined under the microscope. In contrast to the dissecting tendencies of natural science, however, Steiner’s painting depicts the living, dynamic potential which stands behind the plant – lifting us out of the specific genus and providing an image of the growing and formative forces inherent within each individual plant.
Researching Rudolf Steiner’s painting of the Archetypal Plant can help reconnect our outer sense-perceptions with the inner realm of imaginative cognition, releasing us from the spell of matter. To support and enliven such research work and processes, Angela Lord surveys her subject-matter from various aspects, including the historical, evolutionary relationships we share with plants; the representation of plants in art and architecture; plant myths and legends; poetry inspired by flower imagery; cosmic aspects of nature, including earth’s relationships to the sun, moon, planets and stars; formative, creative forces of colours and their relationships to plant forms; and finally, working artistically and painting the Archetypal Plant motif itself.

In developing a broad overview, the author forms a deeper, more complete picture of the plant world, paying homage to its diverse characteristics, and stimulating new perceptions and perspectives. This book is richly illustrated with full-colour images.

ANGELA LORD is a painter, interior colour designer, muralist and art educator. Born in Christchurch, New Zealand, she studied with Gerard Wagner at the Goetheanum Painting School in Dornach, Switzerland. Together with Robert Lord, she is active in Colour Transformation Ltd., a company specializing in Lazure painting, interior design and murals. She recently founded the Columbine Art Academy in Sussex and London, which offers a diploma recognized by the Arts Section at the Goetheanum. She teaches around the world, most recently in China. Although trained as a scientist and a philosopher, Rudolf Steiner always placed a high value on the practice of art and always worked artistically: whatever he did was done with great artistry. Furthermore, as a spiritual teacher, Steiner's ideal was the reunion of science, religion, and art in a new, human sacramental culture. The eleven lectures collected here reveal the many-faceted perspectives Steiner offered regarding the vital role of the visual arts in human affairs. For Steiner, art is above all a way of building a bridge between the spiritual and the physical realms. His views are not abstract theories or utopian ideals, but a constant striving through the inherent qualities of color and form to realize concrete artistic projects in architecture, sculpture, and painting.

On first meeting Steiner's radical ideas, many people -- artists as well as non-artists -- wonder what sense they can make of such an approach to art. The introduction by Michael Howard introduces these ideas by recounting one artist's experience of struggling to make Steiner's views and way of doing art his own. Ultimately, however each person must make their own relationship to Steiner's approach, but the story of how one artist took up the challenge may stimulate others to do the same. The book includes numerous photographs.

Art of Acting, The Body - Soul - Spirit - Word
A Practical and Spiritual Guide, LANGMAN, DAWN
7 Art of Acting, The Body - Soul - Spirit - Word
A Practical and Spiritual Guide

LANGMAN, DAWN
1906999597 / 9781906999599 Paperback
This book will be invaluable to teachers, acting students and practitioners alike. Langman’s inspired methods, fed by some 45 years of teaching and practice, ensure the highest outcomes for the integration of voice, speech and language as a central ingredient of the actor’s craft. She is the most unique and brilliant master teacher in this area I have ever encountered.’ – Rosalba Clemente, Head of Acting, Drama Centre, Flinders University
‘A rite de passage – working with Langman’s book is an initiation into the practice of “Future Theatre”.’ – Dr Jane Gilmer, Assistant Professor of Drama, VPA, National Institute of Education, Singapore
A remarkable achievement that communicates a lifetime of teaching artistry with grace and depth, and, most significantly, reveals the profound spiritual impulses at the heart of Michael Chekhov’s original impulse. A gift for the generations.’ – Dr Diane Caracciolo, Associate Professor of Educational Theatre, Adelphi University
Over the past decades there has been a resurgence of interest in Chekhov’s acting technique. The original publishers of his fundamental text, To the Actor, removed most of the author’s references to Rudolf Steiner, but recent studies acknowledge Chekhov’s personal interest in anthroposophy as the source of his artistic inspiration. Dawn Langman explores the fundamentals of Chekhov’s psycho-physical technique and the metaphysical principles on which it is based. She examines this technique in relation to the specific challenges and gifts provided by the actor’s constitution of body, soul and spirit, and in the context of the canon of great poetic and dramatic texts – illuminated by Steiner’s insights into humanity’s evolving consciousness.
The Art of Acting lays the foundation for the second and third books in her series, in which Langman explores Rudolf Steiner’s art of speech and its integration with Michael Chekhov’s methodology. Together, these books offer a contemporary, spiritually-enlivened path of development for the actor, in which the combined insights of Steiner and Chekhov lead to new possibilities for the performing arts.
DAWN LANGMAN undertook a mainstream speech and acting training in Australia, followed by seven years of performing and teaching at secondary and tertiary levels. Her quest for an integrated approach that includes the spiritual dimension led her to train with Maisie Jones at the London School of Speech Formation in the method developed by Rudolf and Marie Steiner. She then taught for ten years at Emerson College in Sussex. Following this, Dawn trained in Michael Chekhov’s acting technique with Ted Pugh and Fern Sloan of the Actors Ensemble in New York. Returning to Australia, she founded the School of the Living Word, where for eight years she continued to research the integration of Speech Formation with Chekhov’s technique. She currently teaches this methodology at the Drama Centre, Flinders University, South Australia.

Art of Speech, The A Practical and Spiritual Guide, LANGMAN, DAWN
8 Art of Speech, The A Practical and Spiritual Guide
LANGMAN, DAWN
1906999651 / 9781906999650
‘The Art of Speech offers to the English language a systematic, in-depth and thoroughly readable exploration of Rudolf Steiner’s original exercises. Langman’s contribution, developed over decades of research, performance and teaching, is filled with relevance for today’s speech artists. The powerful spiritual inspirations that stand behind the spoken word are infused throughout, giving this book its wings.’ – Dr Diane Caracciolo, Associate Professor of Educational Theatre, Adelphi University
‘Langman’s seminal work leads the artist through a portal to an experience of the heart and the genius of speech as “the activity of divine creative beings”.’ – Dr Jane Gilmer, Assistant Professor of Drama, VPA, National Institute of Education, Singapore
‘A prodigious work, intriguing, enlightening and passionate – and the co-ordination with Chekhov invaluable… Those fortunate enough to see Dawn’s solo performances of King Lear and Kaspar Hauser know that this book is the fruit of living and loving experience.’ – Sophia Walsh, pioneer teacher and artist of Speech Formation in the English language, Dornach, Switzerland
The Art of Speech presents a dynamic path of practice leading to an experience of the Word as a living, healing and creative power. Helping to deliver Western intellectual speech from what Artaud described as ‘shrivelled throats’ and ‘monstrous talking abstractions’, Langman brings to life the spiritual realities out of which a true Art of Speech arises. Inspired by Rudolf Steiner and pioneered initially in the German language by Marie Steiner, this artform is illuminated here through the genius of the English language.
Langman builds a bridge between mainstream research into the intrinsic nature of Speech, and the levels of spiritual cognition that led to Rudolf Steiner’s insights. Speech and language can no longer be reduced to an arbitrary collection of abstract symbols, she asserts. This book will inspire those working with these disciplines as practitioners (both artistic and therapeutic) as well as those who wish to understand their significance in human evolution, both past and future.
Following her first book The Art of Acting, this volume completes a foundation of understanding for an exploration – in the conclusion of Langman’s trilogy – of an integrated art of speech and acting. Grounded in the spiritual reality of the human being, Langman presents a systematic methodology with which to explore Rudolf Steiner’s Speech and Drama Course.
Returning to Australia, she founded the School of the Living Word, where for eight years she continued to research the integration of Speech Formation with Chekhov’s technique. Do you think testing is a fair measure of student and teacher performance?
Ever wonder what could be done in its place?

Here is a book to give teachers and administrators new ideas for effective assessment without tedious testing and reduction of human beings to data! Fresh out of Waldorf schools with thorough going research and explanation of how to proceed without testing for deep and complete evaluation comes new research made possible through Academica Press.

Enter this important book: Assessment for Learning in Waldorf Classrooms by Sara Ciborski and Helen-Ann Ireland. Here two scholars provide a detailed and alternative view to the “measure and punish” scenario in a research project that focuses on the assessment practices of teachers in independent American Waldorf schools. This in-depth qualitative research describes how nine Waldorf teachers implement learner-centered assessment and how their schools support such practices. Detailed vignettes are included that show how academic, social, motivational and arts-integrated curricula can be assessed authentically.

12 Astronomy and Astrology Finding a Relationship to the Cosmos
STEINER, RUDOLF, VON ARNIM, C.
1855842238 / 9781855842236 2009 Paperback
In the Middle Ages, Astronomia - one of the Seven Liberal Arts - was as much about astrology as astronomy. In fact the two disciplines only parted company in the seventeenth century, as the materialistic world-view gained greater prominence. Where once human destiny was connected to stars and planets, and spiritual or soul qualities were associated with the natural world, now the cosmos was seen as consisting of gases, fire and dead rock.

Rudolf Steiner brings a new spiritual perspective to our study of the heavens. Humanity, he says, is intimately connected to cosmic beings, who in turn are related to planets and stars. There is meaning in the cosmos. Although Steiner rejects the simplistic notion of the planets determining our lives and behaviour, he makes a clear connection between the heavenly bodies and human beings. Whilst criticizing the superficial nature of much astrology, Steiner shows that as individuals, and with the guidance of spiritual beings, we choose an appropriate time of birth to match the destiny we are to live.

This enlightening anthology, expertly collated by Margaret Jonas, features excerpts of Steiner's work on the spiritual individualities of the planets, the determination of human characteristics by the constellation at birth, the cultural epochs and the passage of the equinox, cosmic influences on the individual and humanity, life in the planetary spheres between death and rebirth, solar and lunar eclipses, comets, and much more.

Speaking to the teachers at the first Waldorf school in Stuttgart, Steiner asserts that the unfortunate presence of dishonesty and alienation in society today cannot be addressed without a completely renewed and holistic education. He states fact that successful teaching requires a living synthesis of the "spiritual gymnast," the "ensouled rhetorician," and the "intellectual professor." Of these, the formative effect of the rhetorician's cultivation of artistic speech is the most important."It's impossible for true teaching to be boring," declares Steiner, and he offers several examples of how teachers can observe a natural phenomenon so intimately that its creative life can flow into the children through a teacher's own words in the classroom. He also describes, in spiritual scientific depth, how the actions of teachers directly affect the physiological chemistry of their students. From this perspective, education is really therapy, transformed to a higher level, and should be seen as closely related to the healing arts.
Steiner also shows how the perception of hidden relationships between education and the processes of human development can kindle a heartfelt enthusiasm and a sense of responsibility in teachers for the far-reaching health effects that educational activities can produce.German source: "Erziehung und Unterricht aus Menschenerkenntnis" (GA 302a). It was previously in English as two volumes: "Balance in Teaching" and "Deeper Insights into Education".

16 Being of the Arts, The
STEINER, RUDOLF, TRANS & ED REG DOWN
1491201169 / 9781491201169
In what was announced as a lecture Steiner instead begins to tell an extraordinary tale. It begins with two women standing in a stark and frozen landscape: one experiences the bitter cold, the other the extraordinary beauty. Both fall asleep, but while one falls into a sleep on the verge of death, the other is approached out of the sunset by a youth who says: ‘You are art’. She then undergoes a powerful set of experiences. Today we might call them vivid dreams, but that would be too passive. They are more than dreams; she performs deeds and becomes the bearer of mighty, creative impulses for the future.

This tale, told in 1909, has lost none of its originality and vividness. It is as relevant and powerful as when it was first told. It presents the reader with a series of images and beings drawn directly from the spiritual world, but in such a way that, through art, a bridge is built between the spiritual and earthly worlds.

This edition is freshly translated, with a foreword and endnotes containing illustrations and photographs of subjects and works of art mentioned in the course of the tale.
