1 147 Traditional Stories for Primary School Children to Retell
SMITH, CHRIS
1907359397 / 9781907359392
Here is the perfect collection for any teacher who needs a sourcebook of great traditional stories for children aged 5-11 to work from. This book is a handy one-stop shop of 147 stories to retell, with an index linking all the stories to topics, values, plot types, genre, age group and country of origin. The stories come with extensive sources and alternate print and web versions for teachers to use when working with the stories. All are written in the storyteller’s voice, for easy retelling by teachers and students. Stories come with tips for telling and may be photocopied within the school.

Chris Smith developed the Storytelling Schools’ learning model, ‘Where children learn to be storytellers’ over ten years working with schools. He chose this collection in response to teachers’ requests for appropriate stories so that children can learn to retell stories as a powerful way of learning.

The collection is the first companion book to The Storytelling School: Handbook for Teachers.

Active Arithmetic Movement and Mathematics Teaching in the Lower Grades of a Waldorf School, ANDERSEN, HENNING
5 Active Arithmetic Movement and Mathematics Teaching in the Lower Grades of a Waldorf School
ANDERSEN, HENNING
1936367505 / 9781936367504
5.5 x 7.5 inches, illustrated.
Is it possible to teach arithmetic in the first years of schooling in such a way that the majority of pupils do not experience the lesson as a strain? Are there ways of practicing arithmetic that do not adversely affect the child’s zest for life?

Active Arithmetic! Describes the very special way in which arithmetic is taught in a Rudolf Steiner/Waldorf school. Rather than attempting to give a complete account of this teaching method, the book concentrates upon the many different aspects of movement and drawing exercises. These exercises satisfy both the children’s great need for physical activity and their innate curiosity about the world of numbers.

The book is directed not only to teachers of arithmetic in the younger classes, but also to people who work with the same age group outside of school using games and movement. Parents with children requiring special support at home and teachers working with children with special needs will find in the book a wealthy source of helpful ideas.

Written by an experienced Waldorf teacher in Denmark, Active Arithmetic tells how to make math come alive through movement, games, and rhythm in the early grades. Making math a meaningful and memorable event in a young child's life is all important. Active Arithmetic will help you to do it! All recent brain development illustrates that movement is the key to a rich and fully developed skill set in children. Music and rhythm have been shown to light up the whole brain and to help children understand and apply complex math concepts. The many ideas, imaginative games and activities described by this experienced Waldorf teacher hold the key to "Aha!" moments for comprehending important math ideas.

Can Ancient Greek be introduced with levity and whimsy? Author Keith McCrary has introduced hundreds of children and adults to Ancient Greek for over thirty years at Waldorf schools in the United States, Japan and Mexico. Follow the directions for learning to say the Greek alphabet, and he will have you speaking it it in different rhythms, in a series of accents, including Texan! – and even singing it.

Included are pictographs for the letters of the Greek alphabet and ample opportunities to learn about many Greek words that have English “cousins.” Besides learning to count to twenty, you can recite the first lines of Homer’s Odyssey, some well-known philosophical sayings, and much more, plus learn a little history along the way.

You can be amused while learning some Ancient Greek and, perhaps if you pay close attention, you’ll even be amazed. After reading this little book, you may well understand a good bit more than you had before because it IS Greek to you.

This is an excellent introduction for anyone interested in learning about language. The illustrations lift the words off the page and into the imagination. I recommend it for classrooms, homes and a place on your bookshelf.
-- Paul R. Brown, Maui District School Superintendent, ret.

16 Animals are Our Brothers and Sisters Why Animal Experiments are Misleading and Wrong, Responsible Medicine Based on a Spiritual View of Creation
HARTINGER, WERNER, COLLIS, JOHANNA
1902636724 / 9781902636726 2006 Paperback

'The animals are as much God's children as we are, so they are our brothers and sisters' - St Francis of Assisi. Respected surgeon and medical doctor, Werner Hartinger investigates the claims and counterclaims concerning experimentation on animals. Through meticulous analysis he comes to the conclusion that animal experiments are not only unnecessary, but that the experiments themselves are questionable and lead to meaningless results. The cruelty imposed upon animals is therefore not only gratuitous, he argues, but is unhelpful in the development of good medicine for human beings. Hartinger writes from many years' experience within the medical profession, and with ample scientific data to back his findings. He also tackles the spiritual aspect of this question, inspired by the work of the Austrian philosopher Rudolf Steiner. Painting on a vast canvas, he demonstrates the sibling relationship between humans and animals in the context of cosmic and spiritual evolution. The author gives a commentary on Christian teachings regarding animals, examining the biblical commandments. He also studies the varieties of diseases and their causes, and the hidden aspects of sickness and health.

Anthroposophy A-Z A Glossary of Terms Relating to Rudolf Steiner's Spiritual Philosophy, OORT, HENK VAN
17 Anthroposophy A-Z A Glossary of Terms Relating to Rudolf Steiner's Spiritual Philosophy
OORT, HENK VAN
1855842645 / 9781855842649 2011 Paperback
Rudolf Steiner’s spiritual philosophy is the inspiration for many successful initiatives in the world today, from the international Steiner Waldorf school movement to biodynamic agriculture and its increasingly popular produce. Steiner developed his philosophy in dozens of books and many thousands of lectures. His teaching contains dozens of new concepts and ideas, and as a result he had often to create his own vocabulary. In this practical volume - a companion to his Anthroposophy, A Concise Introduction - Henk van Oort gives concise definitions of many terms and concepts in Steiner’s worldview, from the most commonplace to the more obscure.

Anthroposophy A-Z can be used as a reference guide, but also as a gateway into Rudolf Steiner’s manifold world of spiritual ideas and concepts. Anthroposophy can be seen to be a new language - a language that can lead to the world of the spirit. It was with this awareness that Henk van Oort took the initiative to write this glossary. Ultimately, he has written the sort of inspiring handbook that he wished had existed when he first became acquainted with anthroposophy over 40 years ago.

HENK VAN OORT, born in 1943, trained as a primary teacher before taking a Masters degree in English at the Amsterdam University. He has taught for 40 years in primary and secondary education, including class teaching in a Steiner school, teaching English, and running educational courses and seminars for teachers and parents. His interest in literature and poetry has led to his appearance at storytelling and poetry seminars, and his introductory courses to anthroposophy have proved to be highly successful. Based in Bergen N.H. in the Netherlands, Henk van Oort is married and the father of three grown-up children. He is the author of Anthroposophy, A Concise Introduction.
