Steiner's original contribution to human knowledge was based on his ability to conduct spiritual research, the investigation of metaphysical dimensions of existence. With his scientific and philosophical training, he brought a new systematic discipline to the field, allowing for conscious methods and comprehensive results. A natural seer from childhood, he cultivated his spiritual vision to a high degree, enabling him to speak with authority on previously veiled mysteries of life. Topics include: the origins and nature of architecture; the formative influence of architectural forms; the history of architecture in the light of mankind's spiritual evolution; a new architecture as a means of uniting with spiritual forces; art and architecture as manifestations of spiritual realities; metamorphosis in architecture; aspects of a new architecture; the first and second Goetheanums; the architecture of a community in Dornach; the temple is the human being; the restoration of the lost temple.

Mystery drama is a contemporary manifestation of a movement first expressed in early Greek drama, After working with Rudolf Steiner's mystery dramas for some years, Christopher Marcus and his performance group felt the need to stage a contemporary work. The result is Black Earth, a bold and powerful drama of soul and spirit, based around themes of technology, art, destiny, and metamorphosis. First presented in 1999 by Circle-X Arts -- an international group of artists, directors, writers, and producers -- and performed around Europe to much acclaim, Black Earth is published here for the first time.

4 Butterflies Beings of Light
STEINER, RUDOLF, GUT, TAJA, BARTON, MATTHEW
1855843757 / 9781855843752 2013 Paperback
"The butterfly flutters above and over the earth, borne on the air and shimmering with light...We ought really to see them as nothing other than beings of light, joyous in their colours and the play of colours. All the rest is garment and luggage." - Rudolf Steiner Truly poetic and deeply esoteric, these lectures by Rudolf Steiner have been gathered here in a single volume for the first time, with an in-depth introduction that traces and explains the stages of butterfly metamorphosis. The emergence of the butterfly from its pupa is one of the most moving phenomena we can encounter in nature. In this creature's visible transformations, we can experience a revelation of spirit. The butterfly, says Rudolf Steiner, is "...a flower blossom lifted into the air by light and cosmic forces". It is a being that develops from and through light, via a process of incorporation and internalization. By gazing into the world of these special and rarefied creatures, we can intuit that they, "...ray out something even better than sunlight: they shine spirit light out into the cosmos".

Child as a Sense Organ An Anthroposophic Understanding of the Imitation Processes, SELG, PETER
5 Child as a Sense Organ An Anthroposophic Understanding of the Imitation Processes
SELG, PETER
1621481832 / 9781621481836
“Because children’s ability to observe and perceive is unconscious, one does not notice how intensely and deeply the impressions coming from the surroundings enter their organization - not so much by way of various specific senses as through the general ‘sensory being’ of the child. It is generally known that the formation of the brain and of the nerves is completed by the change of teeth. During the first seven years, children’s nerve-and-sense organization, in its plasticity, could be likened to soft wax. During this time, not only do children receive the finest and most intimate impressions from the surroundings, but also, through the working of energy in the nerve-and-sense system, everything received unconsciously radiates and flows into the blood circulation, into the firmness and reliability of the breathing process, into the growth of the tissues, and into the formation of the muscles and skeleton. By means of the nerve-and-sense system, the body of children becomes like an imprint of the surroundings and, particularly, of the morality inherent in them.” —Rudolf Steiner
(Waldorf Education and Anthroposophy 2, p. 68)

The initial period of childhood is essentially about adapting to and incarnating on Earth and establishing a provisional balance between the “spiritual” and the “physical,” between the prenatal cosmic and the earthly factors. During this time, according to Rudolf Steiner, “all the forces of a child’s organization emanate from the neurosensory system.... By bringing respiration into harmony with neurosensory activity, we draw the spirit–soul element into the child’s physical life.”

Peter Selg investigates how children’s early experience of the world begins as an undifferentiated sensory relationship to their phenomenological environment. This aspect of a child’s incarnation leads to learning through imitation and to the process of recognizing “the Other” as a separate entity with which to interact.

In this cogent work, Peter Selg describes the early stages of childhood from the perspectives of conventional scientific and spiritual-scientific—anthropological and anthroposophic—research with the purpose of encouraging a new educational attitude in working with young children. In his numerous references to early childhood development, this was Rudolf Steiner’s most important and urgent purpose.

PETER SELG was born in 1963 in Stuttgart and studied medicine in Witten-Herdecke, Zurich, and Berlin. Until 2000, he worked as the head physician of the juvenile psychiatry department of Herdecke hospital in Germany. Dr. Selg is now director of the Ita Wegman Institute for Basic Research into Anthroposophy (Arlesheim, Switzerland) and professor of medicine at the Alanus University of Arts and Social Sciences (Germany). He lectures extensively and is the author of numerous books, including Seeing Christ in Sickness and Healing (2005); The Therapeutic Eye (2008); A Grand Metamorphosis; (2008); The Figure of Christ (2009); Rudolf Steiner as a Spiritual Teacher (2010); and Rudolf Steiner and the Fifth Gospel (2010). He is married with five children.

7 Cosmic and Human Metamorphosis 7 Lectures, Berlin, Feb. 6, 1917-Mar. 20, 1917 (CW 175
STEINER, RUDOLF
1621480003 / 9781621480006
"As microcosms we are actually part of, and subject to, the same laws that cosmic beings are, just as the breath we draw is subject to our own human nature.... If our hearts are sensitive to the secrets of cosmic existence and not merely blocks of wood, the words we have been placed into the universe will no longer be an abstract statement. We will be fully alive to this fact. Knowledge and a feeling will spring up within us, the fruits of which will be born in our will impulses, and our whole being will live in unison with the great life, divine cosmic existence." —Rudolf Steiner

In this important series of lectures, Rudolf Steiner lays out for Society members right and wrong ways of establishing connections with those who have died. Rather than following the materialistic desire to draw those who have died back into the physical realm, Steiner presents a means toward true spiritual union through strengthening one’s forces of consciousness. He also showed how help is provided from the sphere of Christ’s activity as a balance for our time. Steiner stated:

"One who sees into the deeper meaning intended by our spiritual science recognizes in it not merely theoretical knowledge about all sorts of human problems, the members of the human being, reincarnation and karma, but one looks in it for an entirely different language, a way to express oneself in regard to spiritual matters. The fact that we learn through spiritual science to speak inwardly in our thoughts with the spiritual world is far more important than acquiring theoretical ideas. The Christ is with us even until the end of the world. It is his language that we must learn."

This book is a translation (translator unknown) of 7 lectures from Bausteine zu einer Erkenntnis des Mysteriums von Golgatha. Kosmische und menschliche Metamorphose ("Building Blocks for an Understanding of the Mystery of Golgotha: Cosmic and Human Metamorphoses") 17 lectures, GA 175.

8 Death as Metamorphosis of Life
STEINER, RUDOLF
0880106077 / 9780880106078 2008 Paperback
illustrations
This jewel of a book — consisting of seven lectures given in various cities, mostly in 1918 — movingly and with great spiritual maturity and rare emotional intensity expresses Rudolf Steiner’s wisdom, insight, and compassion. Several lectures deal primarily with aspects of life after death. The first describes the three realms after earthly life: that of intense, surging sensation (sympathy and antipathy); that of the ebb and flow of will impulses that stream into the human sphere, affecting in increasingly wider circles human life on earth (karmic relationships, animal existence); and that of the spiritual hierarchies. As Steiner says: "As I see it, my primary mission these days is to make people aware again, with the help of such ideas, that the dead are working and contributing to human development."

The following lectures amplify this mission in different ways, explicitly and implicitly. At stake is the need to understand that we are spiritual beings and live in perpetual interaction with the spiritual world—not only the dead, but also with Christ and angelic worlds. These realities, along with the presence of the dead, permeate this book. The final two lectures make this explicit with a clarion call to awake to the demands of human evolution, which the entire spiritual world is working for—freedom and love, which in turn requires our work with the angels and with Christ to overcome egotism, the sole obstacle to the spirituality of the future.

Death as Metamorphosis of Life is a translation from the German of Der Tod als Lebenswandlung (GA 182).

Disease, Karma and Healing Spiritual-Scientific Enquiries into the Nature of the Human Being, STEINER, RUDOLF
9 Disease, Karma and Healing Spiritual-Scientific Enquiries into the Nature of the Human Being
STEINER, RUDOLF
1855843838 / 9781855843837 2013
Today, illness is almost universally regarded as either a nuisance or a grave misfortune. In contrast to this conventional thinking, Rudolf Steiner places the suffering caused by disease in a broad vista that includes an understanding of karma and personal metamorphosis. Illness comes to expression in the physical body, but mostly does not originate in it, says Steiner, and thus a key part of the physician’s work involves gaining insight into the whole nature of an individual – his essential core being. From this perspective, illness offers us the opportunity for deeper healing.

Throughout this volume Rudolf Steiner draws our attention to the greater scope of the smallest phenomena – even a seemingly insignificant headache. He casts vivid light on things we normally take for granted, such as the human capacity to laugh or cry, and in the process broadens our vision of human existence. The apparently mundane human experiences of forgetting and remembering are intrinsic to our humanity, for example, and have unsuspected moral and spiritual dimensions. Steiner’s insights are never merely ‘lofty’ or nebulously ‘spiritual’ but time and again connect with the minutest realities of everyday life.

In these 18 lectures, delivered on a weekly basis as part of an ongoing course covering ‘the whole field of spiritual science’, Steiner elaborates in detail on the diverse interplay of the human being’s constituting aspects (physical body, etheric body, astral body and ego or ‘I’) in relation to rhythmic processes, developing consciousness, the history of human evolution, and our connection with the cosmos. Within this broad canvas, some of his themes acquire a very distinctive focus – such as vivid accounts of the ‘intimate history’ of Christianity, ‘creating out of nothing’, the interior of the earth, and health and illness. Other topics include: the nature of pain, suffering, pleasure and bliss; the four human group souls of lion, bull, eagle and man; the significance of the Ten Commandments; the nature of original sin; the deed of Christ and the adversary powers of Lucifer, Ahriman and the Asuras; evolution and involution; the Atlantean period – and even Friedrich Nietzsche’s madness!

The first 9 lectures in this book wre originally published under the title "Evolution and the Being of Man"

Educating the Soul On the Esoteric in Shakespeare, ALWYN, JOSIE AND MASTERS, BRIEN
10 Educating the Soul On the Esoteric in Shakespeare
ALWYN, JOSIE AND MASTERS, BRIEN
1906999929 / 9781906999926
The power of Shakespeare lies in his evidently conscious knowledge, skill and understanding of how to work with the alchemical potential in the human soul in the crafting of his plays. Each play is made as an exquisitely unique transformative device for the education of the soul.’

‘Books carry on conversations across the thresholds of time and space’, writes Josie Alwyn in her introduction. This book is the fruit of her ‘conversation’ with Brien Masters – a collaboration that began more than twenty years ago, when she was learning to be a Waldorf teacher. They open their discussions with the broader theme of the role and ‘mission’ of drama in human development, before focusing on the central topic: the potential for metamorphosis inherent in Shakespeare’s plays. This creative, birth-giving, transformative essence of Shakespeare – the esoteric core of his work – is vitally important to our times, they suggest, and contributes to the ongoing cultural education of the human soul.

Published to commemorate the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare’s death, Educating the Soul offers an overview of Shakespeare’s journey as a playwright in the context of evolving human consciousness. The heart of the book features nine essays on Shakespeare’s most performed plays. Just as the middle act of a Shakespearian drama gives a point of transformation, so these essays represent the central, unfolding dialogue that took place between the writers as the book developed. This section is followed by an in-depth study of Hamlet, that sees the story as a learning process, deeply strengthened by the primary character’s own education and changing consciousness. Finally, the book explores the theme of transformation through The Tempest and in relation to the archetypal ‘tree of life’.

Accessible to all, the motifs of the various chapters in this book are woven lightly together, enabling the reader to follow the contents in sequence, or to dip in and pick up the threads at any point.

JOSIE ALWYN, born in London in 1951, has lived most of her life amid the South Downs in Sussex. She was educated at Lewes Grammar School and Sussex University, graduating with an MA in English Renaissance Literature and Drama. Doctoral research led her deeper into the classical and medieval streams of thinking that flow into Shakespeare’s writing, and also introduced her to the work of Rudolf Steiner. The beginning of family life in 1984 opened vocational pathways into Steiner education: first in the Brighton Steiner School and at the London Waldorf Teacher Training Seminar with Brien Masters, then at Michael Hall Steiner School in Forest Row as Upper School English teacher. Josie is currently co-director of the London Waldorf Seminar and a Steiner Waldorf Schools Fellowship adviser.

BRIEN MASTERS (1931-2013) was a distinguished educationalist, musician and a prolific author. Qualified both as a State and Steiner-Waldorf teacher, he taught for more than 50 years, and acted as a consultant up to government ministerial level. He wrote numerous articles and publications for use in schools, and his Doctoral thesis was a critical appraisal of Waldorf praxis in the light of Rudolf Steiner’s educational ideas. His career included appointments as Choirmaster and Organist in the Anglican Church, Chair of the Steiner Waldorf Schools Fellowship, Editor of Child and Man and Steiner Education, and Director of the London Waldorf Teacher Training Seminar. His books include Kindling the Word, Mozart and Adventures in Steiner Education

11 Flowforms: the Rhythmic Power of Water
WILKES, JOHN
0863153925 / 9780863153921 Paperback
Color & B/W photographs
What is the true nature of water and does it have memory? By working with the rhythm and flow of water, can we increase its life-giving power? Water is not only fundamental to life but is essential for the cycles and changes in nature. John Wilkes argues as well that water is the universal bearer of whatever character we put into it. For this reason the way we treat water is of crucial importance to our health, and to the well-being of our planet. Working with his remarkable invention, the Flowform, Wilkes has uncovered hidden secrets of the world of water, and at the same time created an artform of great beauty. His lifetime of applied research into rhythms and water, fully revealed in this book for the first time, has startling implications for such topical issues as farming and irrigation: food production and processing: water treatment and recycling: and health and cosmetic products.

This ground-breaking book is lavishly illustrated to show both the beauty of the Flowform and the wide range of its applications. John Wilkes studied sculpture at the Royal College of Art. While in London he met George Adam and Theodor Schwenk, a pioneer in water research and author of Sensitive Chaos. Wilkes joined the Institute for Flow Sciences in Herrischried, Germany and began his investigations into the flow and rhythm of water which would eventually result in the Flowform. During this period, he also worked at the Goetheanum in Switzerland where he researched and restored Rudolf Steiner's sculptural and architectural models. In 1971 he joined Emerson College in Forest Row, Sussex, and is now Director of the Virbela Rhythm Research Institute

Greatest Gift Ever Given A Living Spiritual Mystery: Studies in Esoteric Christianity, RIDENOUR, MICHAEL
14 Greatest Gift Ever Given A Living Spiritual Mystery: Studies in Esoteric Christianity
RIDENOUR, MICHAEL
1912230097 / 9781912230099
As a child in a non-religious family, Michael Ridenour found a Bible one day and began reading. Initially excited by its lively stories, he paused at the New Testament, faced with a baffling inner question: Where in the world is Christ today? An unexpected answer came during his teenage years with a spontaneous experience of the Christ being, but this only led to more questions. Later, discovering the work of Rudolf Steiner, he found the authentic vision and language he needed to clarify and better comprehend his own experiences, but the questions kept coming.
The Greatest Gift Ever Given is a fruit of Ridenour’s life-long search for answers: a book that is at once deeply thoughtful, humorous, philosophical and poetic. In Part I, ‘Raising the Foundation’, he studies the Judeo-Christian mysteries. After humanity’s ‘fall’ into materialism, these mysteries signal the development of human individuality. The impulse for self-hood continues with Christ, who brings a new path of divine love. But the mystery of Christ leads naturally to his shadow. Today, we can no longer escape the question: Where in the world is Judas? Without Judas’s betrayal, Christ’s greatest gift could never have been given. We can’t reject Judas, but should transform him within ourselves.
In Part II, ‘Lowering the Temple’, Ridenour relates the theme of metamorphosis to the contemporary world. Once guided by initiates, personal transformation now needs to blossom from within each individual human soul. The topic of evolution takes us to a consideration of the perennially-controversial Charles Darwin, as well as the intuitive approach of Goethe and the living thinking of Rudolf Steiner. A rich treasure-trove of ideas, The Greatest Gift Ever Given sharpens a dynamic focus on current spiritual needs and contributes a thought-provoking response to them.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Learning to read at age five from a young adult book on evolution, having out-of-body experiences as he grew older and waking up as an adolescent with the certainty that he had a soul, gave a budding Michael Ridenour a growing sense of reality that culminated with a Christ experience in his middle teens. But he didn’t know what to do with any of it. A few degrees in physics, math, French and English literature left him intellectually richer but clueless. A two-year stint teaching English to Buddhist monks in Thailand, though enormously satisfying, still fell short. Then he discovered the spiritual perceptions of esoteric Christianity and spiritual science given by Rudolf Steiner. This grounded him in esoteric literature and enabled him to complete a book on the Templar architecture of Chartres Cathedral (Hermetica Press, 2009). Then, several years later, the same stream flowed into the present volume. He continues his career as a writer and Waldorf teacher in Southern California.

16 Healing Madonnas Exploring the Sequence of Madonna Images Created by Rudolf Steiner and Felix Peipers for Use in Therapy and Meditation
BAMFORD, CHRISTOPHER
1584209895 / 9781584209898
This book explores a little-known example of Rudolf Steiner’s efforts to bring into being, in a practical and future-oriented way, a contemporary embodiment of the wisdom that once lived in the ancient Mysteries—in this instance a sequence of fifteen images of the Madonna, intended originally for contemplation under supervision in a clinical setting as a new form of therapy for those suffering from wounds of the soul.

The idea first arose in 1908 in a conversation with Dr. Felix Peipers after a lecture in which Steiner, addressing the subterranean spiritual links connecting ancient Egypt and our own time, described certain healing functions that were part of the Mysteries of the Goddess Isis. Steiner drew a parallel between Isis and the Christian Madonna, Mary, as, in some sense, the evolutionary metamorphosis of Isis, focusing on Raphael’s visionary image of her in his Sistine Madonna.

The sequence itself was not fully formulated until 1911. Consisting of a series of fifteen images, predominantly by Raphael, and one sculpture, the first half begins and ends with the Sistine Madonna, which "frames" and contextualizes it. The second half is similarly framed, but this time by two details from The Transfiguration.

Patients in Dr. Peipers’ clinic would establish a calm, reverential meditative soul mood before being led into a deep contemplation of the images in sequence. In addition to its therapeutic use, the entire sequence of images is well suited for individual meditation and contemplation.

Topics covered include: the mystery of seeing; Beauty, Truth and Goodness; whether the images are sacred-religious or secular-spiritual; the centrality of devotion; Sophia, the divine feminine Wisdom; the once-and-future Holy Mother; Isis and Madonna; the origins of the Madonna sequence; the pentagram, the etheric body, and the organization of the sequence; working with the images; and Rudolf Steiner’s healing mission. Also included are sections on the Sistine Madonna and The Transfiguration.

Following Goethe's participatory method, and drawing on his observation on a number of continents, Suchantke presents evolution as an integrated dynamic process that unfolds on a far more fundamental level than Darwin's natural selection.

Beautifully illustrated through the author's own drawings and colour photographs, this masterly work offers a rich, dynamic and deeply meaningful understanding of organic life.

20 Metamorphosis Journeys Through Transformation of Form
GOODWIN, GERTRAUD

Approaching the different and manifold sequences in this book... one will gradually come to realise that metamorphosis can become an ideal for knowledge, a guiding path for self-knowledge and knowledge of the world – as intuitive contemplation and as artistic creation.’ – Dr Peter Wolf

What is metamorphosis? Through the medium of art, sculptor Gertraud Goodwin invites us to enter the realm of time and continuously changing movement in this highly original book. With chapters by various artists and writers, interwoven with her key insights, Goodwin offers numerous points of entry to understanding the mystery of metamorphosis. Profusely-illustrated in colour, we are shown many sequences of images – of sculptures, reliefs and graphic works – which, with the aid of informed commentary, we are invited to ‘read’. These images belong together, developing from one to the next – just as single experiences and events in life belong to our biographies. One motif, one movement, passes through all stages, from simple beginnings and more differentiated formations, to a culmination – and, from there, back to a more mature simplicity and concentration, which makes a new beginning possible.

‘In relation to the transcendent, where ordinary words fail, the language of form, texture and relations in space, like those of music in time, offer alternatives to words, perhaps less encumbered by preconceptions. These pages offer many examples of the beauties and mysteries of metamorphosis, which is itself an essential component of Nature’s creative language.’ – Dr Philip Kilner
