Animals are Our Brothers and Sisters Why Animal Experiments are Misleading and Wrong, Responsible Medicine Based on a Spiritual View of Creation, HARTINGER, WERNER, COLLIS, JOHANNA
1 Animals are Our Brothers and Sisters Why Animal Experiments are Misleading and Wrong, Responsible Medicine Based on a Spiritual View of Creation
1902636724 / 9781902636726 2006 Paperback
'The animals are as much God's children as we are, so they are our brothers and sisters' - St Francis of Assisi. Respected surgeon and medical doctor, Werner Hartinger investigates the claims and counterclaims concerning experimentation on animals. Through meticulous analysis he comes to the conclusion that animal experiments are not only unnecessary, but that the experiments themselves are questionable and lead to meaningless results. The cruelty imposed upon animals is therefore not only gratuitous, he argues, but is unhelpful in the development of good medicine for human beings. Hartinger writes from many years' experience within the medical profession, and with ample scientific data to back his findings. He also tackles the spiritual aspect of this question, inspired by the work of the Austrian philosopher Rudolf Steiner. Painting on a vast canvas, he demonstrates the sibling relationship between humans and animals in the context of cosmic and spiritual evolution. The author gives a commentary on Christian teachings regarding animals, examining the biblical commandments. He also studies the varieties of diseases and their causes, and the hidden aspects of sickness and health.

Anthroposophy A Concise Introduction to Rudolf Steiner's Spiritual Philosophy, OORT, HENK VAN
3 Anthroposophy A Concise Introduction to Rudolf Steiner's Spiritual Philosophy
1902636929 / 9781902636924 2008 Paperback
People today recognise Rudolf Steiner's work largely because of initiatives such as the worldwide Waldorf school movement, biodynamic agriculture, and anthroposophic medicine. Nevertheless, the comprehensive spiritual philosophy behind these movements is not so well known. In this concise presentation, based on years of teaching introductory courses on the subject, van Oort presents an overview of key aspects of Steiner's thought. He deals with concepts such as body, soul, and spirit; the relationship between humankind and the animal kingdom; and the evolution of consciousness, a topic that opens panoramic vistas of human development in the form of successive cultural periods extending over thousands of years.

Henk van Oort, born in 1943, trained as a primary teacher before earning a Masters degree in English at the Amsterdam University. He has taught for forty years in primary and secondary education, including class teaching in a Waldorf school, teaching English, and leading educational courses and seminars for teachers and parents. His interest in literature and poetry has led to his appearance at storytelling and poetry seminars, and his introductory courses to Anthroposophy have been highly successful. Based in Bergen N.H. in the Netherlands, Henk van Oort is married and the father of three.

Introduction: "Rudolf Steiner’s Faust," by Frederick Amrine
Goethe, the great German polymath poet, scientist, dramatist, and novelist, was a major influence throughout Steiner’s life and teaching. While still a student, Steiner wrote introductions to Goethe’ scientific writings (1884–1890), the collection of which became volume 1 in his Collected Works. He also wrote two volumes on Goethe’s epistemology (1886) and philosophy (1894). As he moved closer to the esoteric world, he also gave seminal lectures on Goethe’s fairy tale, “The Green Snake and the Beautiful Lily.” Gradually, he finally approach Goethe’s masterwork, the epic (and deeply esoteric) drama, Faust.

This book contains fifteen lectures, given between 1910 and 1916. A companion volume (CW 273, forthcoming) contains thirteen more lectures given between 1916 and 1919. Taken together these two volumes illuminate in deeply esoteric ways both Anthroposophy and Goethe’s own astonishing vision; the first volume focusing more on anthroposophy, the second more on Faust.

Beginning with ten short extracts that span twenty years (from the 1880s to 1909), the first lecture sets the tone—Goethe sought spiritual science, Faust is the record of his striving, and we are led to see how Goethe’s great drama is filled with embryonic insights that developed and became Anthroposophy. This theme is then developed, in lecture after lecture, with ever-deepening focus. Whether it is a question of the spiritual nature of matter, the reverence for truth and knowledge, reincarnation, the Mystery of Golgotha, evil, the nature of the elemental world, aesthetics, the challenge of our times, human destiny and the nature evolution, these lectures show Goethe as the great initiate and develop Anthroposophy—Spiritual Science—in a profoundly esoteric light.

Not previously published in English, this volume has been awaited by many. It is essential reading for anyone interested in Rudolf Steiner and spiritual science.

This book is volume 272 in the Collected Works (CW) of Rudolf Steiner, published by SteinerBooks, 2013. It is a translation of the German Geisteswissenschaftliche Erläuterungen zu Goethes Faust. Band I Faust der Strebende Mensch (Novalis-Verlag Verlag, Freiburg im Breisgau, 1955).

6 Approaching the Mystery of Golgotha
0880106069 / 9780880106061 2006 Paperback
In February of 1913 - a landmark year for Rudolf Steiner and Anthroposophy - the first General Meeting of the Anthroposophical Society was held. In September, the Foundation Stone for the Goetheanum was laid in Dornach. The ground for Anthroposophy as we know it today, was established. Such is the background for the remarkable lectures contained in this volume. Outwardly, they begin to set the record straight. Inwardly, they seek to establish a right relationship of service to Christ and the spiritual worlds in accord with the spirit of the times, the archangel Michael. For the first time, Rudolf Steiner reveals openly the need for a true "Michael School" and that he and Anthroposophy, the fruit of his spiritual research, are earthly representatives of Michael. Christ and Michael are the explicit guiding lights of this collection, which itself represents a profound act of Christ-Michael service. With courage, devotion, and conviction, Rudolf Steiner, now free and independent, the "teacher" of his own "school," sets about unveiling the truth and reality, as he knows it.
Again and again, he returns to the sacrificial deeds of Christ - creative, sustaining, and enabling our humanity - before, during, and after Golgotha. The teaching at the heart of this volume, as it is at the heart of the Christ, is selflessness the overcoming of egotism and the primacy of the other. "We must become selfless - that is the task of culture today for the future. Human beings must become more and more selfless. Therein lies the future of right moral life actions, the future of all acts of love that can occur through earthly humanity." This Collected Works edition contains a new introduction, a chronology of Rudolf Steiner's life, and an index. This volume is a translation of "Vorstufen zum Mysterium von Golgatha" (GA 152).

Archangel Michael, The His Mission and Ours, STEINER, RUDOLF, BAMFORD, CHRISTOPHER
7 Archangel Michael, The His Mission and Ours
0880103787 / 9780880103787 1994 Paperback
"The Michael age has dawned. Hearts begin to have thoughts. Enthusiasm no longer flows from mystical obscurity, but from the inner clarity that thought conveys. To grasp this is to receive Michael into one's soul. Thoughts that today seek to grasp the spirit must spring from hearts that beat for Michael as the fiery cosmic prince of thought." Rudolf Steiner

For centuries, the tradition of the "mystical chronology" of the world's seven Archangelic Regents has been part of Western esoteric teaching. According to this tradition, 1879 marked the return of the solar spirit Michael - the Archangel of the Sun - to oversee earthly evolution. Steiner always placed his life and work in the service of Michael's evolutionary task. And he recognized that, at the beginning of the twentieth century, humanity emerged from the Kali Yuga, or Dark Age, and entered the Age of Light. Against this background, Steiner described the ascent of Michael as cosmic ruler, his battle with the "dragon" of the spirits of darkness, and his roles as the countenance of Christ and the guardian of cosmic intelligence.
He also gave many profound indications of how Michael's evolutionary task depends on the free and independent collaboration of human co-workers.

Speaking on behalf of Michael, Steiner laid out the essentials for a new Michaelic path to full humanity. Among the elements of this path are the development of selfless individuality; cosmopolitanism; the practice of the presence of Christ; fearlessness; the transformation of thinking and perception in a new synthesis of science, art, and religion; the spiritualization of space; and the separation of thought from language. This volume gathers Rudolf Steiner's most important statements on this subject, making it a primary source for dealing with today's political, social, psychological, and spiritual crises.

8 Architecture An Introductory Reader
1855841231 / 9781855841239 2003 Paperback
Steiner's original contribution to human knowledge was based on his ability to conduct spiritual research, the investigation of metaphysical dimensions of existence. With his scientific and philosophical training, he brought a new systematic discipline to the field, allowing for conscious methods and comprehensive results. A natural seer from childhood, he cultivated his spiritual vision to a high degree, enabling him to speak with authority on previously veiled mysteries of life. Topics include: the origins and nature of architecture; the formative influence of architectural forms; the history of architecture in the light of mankind's spiritual evolution; a new architecture as a means of uniting with spiritual forces; art and architecture as manifestations of spiritual realities; metamorphosis in architecture; aspects of a new architecture; the first and second Goetheanums; the architecture of a community in Dornach; the temple is the human being; the restoration of the lost temple.

Art and Human Consciousness , RICHTER, GOTTFRIED AND OBERHUBER, KONRAD
9 Art and Human Consciousness
0880104783 / 9780880104784 Paperback
This survey of western art from ancient Egypt to Picasso looks at visual art in a completely new and imaginative way. Gottfried Richter’s lively and penetrating observations will inspire and enthuse the novice, while breathing new life into the thinking of art critics and historians.

Richter concerns himself broadly with architecture, sculpture, and painting—as well as mythology and legend—in presenting the creations of artist and architect as an expression of the evolution of human consciousness. In vivid images he offers the reader interpretive keys to understand this process in all areas of art history.

With many examples the author illustrates how human life has undergone a qualitative transformation as humanity has gradually freed itself from a life determined by spiritual guidance in order to take hold of the sensory world and experience free individuality.

13 slide presentations, Dornach, Oct. 8, 1916 – Oct. 29, 1917 CW 292
Rudolf Steiner understood that the history of art is a field in which the evolution of consciousness is symptomatically and transparently revealed.

This informal sequence of thirteen lectures was given during the darkest hours of World War I. It was a moment when the negative consequences of what he called “the age of the consciousness soul,” which had begun around 1417, were most terribly made apparent. In these lectures he sought to provide an antidote to pessimism. After describing the movement of consciousness from Greece into Rome, which coupled with influences from the Orthodox East, he showed how these influences transformed as the Middle Ages became the Renaissance.

The process that begins with Cimabue and Giotto develops, deepens, and becomes more conscious in the great Renaissance masters Leonardo, Michelangelo, and Raphael. And then the continuation of this movement in the Northern masters—Du¨rer and Holbein, as well as the whole German tradition. An entire lecture is devoted to Rembrandt, followed by one on Dutch and Flemish painting. Thus themes are woven together that bring us into the way in which past epochs of consciousness and art live again in our consciousness soul epoch.

Replete with interesting information and over 600 color and black and white images, these lectures are rich and dense with ideas, enabling one to understand both the art of the Renaissance and the transformation of consciousness that it announced. These lectures demonstrate (to paraphrase Shelley) that artists truly are “the unacknowledged legislators of the age.”

Art History as a Reflection of Inner Spiritual Impulses is a translation from German of GA 292, Kunstgeschichte als Abbild innerer geistiger Impulse (Rudolf Steiner Verlag, 2000).

Art of Speech, The A Practical and Spiritual Guide, LANGMAN, DAWN
12 Art of Speech, The A Practical and Spiritual Guide
1906999651 / 9781906999650
‘The Art of Speech offers to the English language a systematic, in-depth and thoroughly readable exploration of Rudolf Steiner’s original exercises. Langman’s contribution, developed over decades of research, performance and teaching, is filled with relevance for today’s speech artists. The powerful spiritual inspirations that stand behind the spoken word are infused throughout, giving this book its wings.’ – Dr Diane Caracciolo, Associate Professor of Educational Theatre, Adelphi University
‘Langman’s seminal work leads the artist through a portal to an experience of the heart and the genius of speech as “the activity of divine creative beings”.’ – Dr Jane Gilmer, Assistant Professor of Drama, VPA, National Institute of Education, Singapore
‘A prodigious work, intriguing, enlightening and passionate – and the co-ordination with Chekhov invaluable… Those fortunate enough to see Dawn’s solo performances of King Lear and Kaspar Hauser know that this book is the fruit of living and loving experience.’ – Sophia Walsh, pioneer teacher and artist of Speech Formation in the English language, Dornach, Switzerland
The Art of Speech presents a dynamic path of practice leading to an experience of the Word as a living, healing and creative power. Helping to deliver Western intellectual speech from what Artaud described as ‘shrivelled throats’ and ‘monstrous talking abstractions’, Langman brings to life the spiritual realities out of which a true Art of Speech arises. Inspired by Rudolf Steiner and pioneered initially in the German language by Marie Steiner, this artform is illuminated here through the genius of the English language.
Langman builds a bridge between mainstream research into the intrinsic nature of Speech, and the levels of spiritual cognition that led to Rudolf Steiner’s insights. Speech and language can no longer be reduced to an arbitrary collection of abstract symbols, she asserts. This book will inspire those working with these disciplines as practitioners (both artistic and therapeutic) as well as those who wish to understand their significance in human evolution, both past and future.
Following her first book The Art of Acting, this volume completes a foundation of understanding for an exploration – in the conclusion of Langman’s trilogy – of an integrated art of speech and acting. Grounded in the spiritual reality of the human being, Langman presents a systematic methodology with which to explore Rudolf Steiner’s Speech and Drama Course.
DAWN LANGMAN undertook a mainstream speech and acting training in Australia, followed by seven years of performing and teaching at secondary and tertiary levels. Her quest for an integrated approach that includes the spiritual dimension led her to train with Maisie Jones at the London School of Speech Formation in the method developed by Rudolf and Marie Steiner. She then taught for ten years at Emerson College in Sussex. Following this, Dawn trained in Michael Chekhov’s acting technique with Ted Pugh and Fern Sloan of the Actors Ensemble in New York. Returning to Australia, she founded the School of the Living Word, where for eight years she continued to research the integration of Speech Formation with Chekhov’s technique. She currently teaches this methodology at the Drama Centre, Flinders University, South Australia. Dawn is the author of The Art of Acting (2014).

13 Aspects of Human Evolution
0880102527 / 9780880102520 1987 Paperback
This volume goes deeply into questions of the soul's evolving, changing needs for development. Steiner shows how the natural development of the soul stops at about the age of 27. After that we no longer inwardly grow unless we bring it about ourselves. Steiner also explains that comprehending how we arrive at aesthetic assessments depends on an understanding of the higher members of the human being and their relationships to the lower members. This volume along with The Karma of Materialism completes the entire German volume GA 176.

0880105887 / 9780880105880 2001 Paperback
ASTRONOMY AND SPIRITUAL SCIENCE collects writings on astronomy by Dr. Elizabeth Vreede and is a fascinating compendium of scientific and spiritual knowledge. Between September 1927 and August 1930, Dr. Vreede wrote a monthly "letter," available by subscription, about both modern astronomy and classical astrology in the light of spiritual science. These letters include clear explanations of the fundamentals of astronomy and discussions of the role of astrology in the modern world. They also include inspiring presentations of a worldview that sees the stars, planets, and in fact all physical phenomena as manifestations of spiritual beings and spiritual activities. Among the many topics Dr. Vreede considers are the role of nutation, precession, and other movements of the Earth in human evolution and life; the comets; the relations of the heavenly bodies to spiritual beings; horoscopes; solar and lunar eclipses; and the deeper meaning of the Christian holidays such as Easter and Whitsun.

Attack of the Enemy
The Occult Inspiration Behind Adolf Hitler and the Nazis
An Esoteric Study, TAUTZ, JOHANNES
16 Attack of the Enemy
The Occult Inspiration Behind Adolf Hitler and the Nazis
An Esoteric Study

1906999716 / 9781906999711 Paperback
The time of Nazi dictatorship in Germany (1933-45) consistently stimulates more interest than any other period of human history, as witnessed by the countless books and other media on Adolf Hitler and his leading henchmen. What is the basis for this enduring fascination? And, does the abundance of available material help us truly to understand the phenomenon?
In this clear-sighted study, Tautz concludes that there is an existential need for the human psyche to come to terms with the forces of destruction that broke out during the era of National Socialism. In an attempt to get to the essence of the phenomenon, he employs the method of ‘historical symtomatology’, as developed by the philosopher and scientist Rudolf Steiner. Through these means, ‘... the historical process is perceived as the physiognomic expression of spiritual forces’. By viewing events as symptoms, the outer facts become transparent to the hidden influences that lie behind them, and occult aspects are revealed.
Tautz focuses on the degenerate elements that inspired National Socialism – their meaning, nature and methods – and examines their manifestation in earthly events. He reveals the spiritual context in which these adversary, opposing forces erupted and attacked humanity – at a time when human consciousness had stepped over a new threshold. The Nazi functionaries and their spectral leader, whom he refers to as ‘the Medium’, willingly served these powers, whilst the bedazzled masses were largely passive. If we are serious about developing an egalitarian society today that corresponds to the present level of human evolution, he argues, we need to understand this period of tyranny in Germany at the deepest levels.
In addition to Tautz’s classic text, a new Appendix by Andreas Bracher brings the reader up to date with a survey of relevant literature on the theme as well as an insightful review of the Nazis’ attitude to Rudolf Steiner and the anthroposophical movement he founded. Contemporary extracts from the Völkische Beobachter (the Nazi’s house journal) indicate the viciousness and hatred directed towards Steiner and anthroposophy by the National Socialists.
JOHANNES TAUTZ – author, historian, religious scholar, anthroposophist and Waldorf teacher (at the first Steiner school in Stuttgart, Germany) – was born in 1914 in Koblenz. He studied German and History, graduating with a dissertation on Schelling. The author of W.J. Stein, A Biography, he lived in Darmstadt, Germany until his death in 2008.

Lecture titles: 'The Radical Path of Consciousness: The Heralds of the Christ' by Hilmar Moore; 'From Moses to Paul: The Old Adam and the New Adam' by Rene Querido; 'Behold, I Make All Things New: Toward a World Pentecost' by Hilmar Moore
The first lecture surveys the important heralds of the Christ's incarnation and emphasizes the radical impulse that Krishna, Gautama Buddha, Zarathustra, and the Hebrew people imparted to the spiritual life of humanity. In the second lecture, Rene Querido considers Moses, who had such a formative influence on the singular development of the Hebrew people, and St. Paul, whose experience of the Christ led him to understand that the Messiah came for all human beings, not only the Hebrews. The third lecture attempts to describe the work of the Holy Spirit in the evolution of human consciousness, with emphasis on the capacity for spiritual experience. In an epilogue, Rene Querido places the conference theme into the life and work of Rudolf Steiner, as 'Behold, I Make All Things New' describes quite accurately many aspects of his revelation of spiritual science. ?from the Introduction

Rene Querido (1926?2004) was multi-national. He taught, lectured, and wrote on Waldorf education and various anthroposophical themes in French, German, Dutch, and English. He founded and advised several Waldorf schools and served as director of Rudolf Steiner College in Califoroia for fourteen years. Beyond Religion The Cultural Evolution of the Sense of the Sacred, from Shamanism to Religion to Post-religious Spirituality, THOMPSON, WILLIAM IRWIN, PREFACE BY JOY E STOCKE
20 Beyond Religion The Cultural Evolution of the Sense of the Sacred, from Shamanism to Religion to Post-religious Spirituality
1584201517 / 9781584201519
In an age of religious fundamentalist violence around the world, it is heartening to read poet and cultural historian William Irwin’s Thompson’s contention that a new form of post-religious spirituality is emerging in our planetary civilization, one that is more appropriate to our new electronic and globally interconnected noetic polities. This little book is a Vade Mecum of the cultural evolutionary news to keep in one’s pocket to read along with the day’s emotionally manipulative political news.

Thompson shows us that, like a dying star in supernova, the explosion of religious violence is a sign of medieval religions’ death and not their rebirth. The brilliant thirteenth-century Renaissance that gave us the Gothic Cathedrals and the Convivencia of Christian, Jews, and Muslims in southern Spain was followed by the Black Death and the Inquisition, but the Italian Renaissance still took off in fifteenth-century Florence, as Giotto was followed by Fra Angelico and the syncretic school of Chartres was followed by Cosimo di Medici’s Florentine Academy. The Big Picture that the poet and cultural historian can provide enables us to participate in the larger processes of cultural transformation at work in our world.
