918 Playsilk, solid colour 90cm x 90cm
HONEYBEE

Children have always used found items to create toys and props for imaginative play. Around the world they have used their mother’s scarves and pieces of cloth to make toys. Picking up a piece of cloth, a piece of wood, or a common housebound object allows children to use their imagination in a different way than giving them already formed objects. Putting their creative forces to work is important for creative thinking in adulthood.
A basket of colored playsilks is one of the best additions to a child’s playroom. It is amazing to see what children create with them.
Some children make costumes like capes, skirts, pants, hats, veils, animal tails and more. The next day the same silks become green grass for their toy animals to live on, blue water to sail the boats, or a rainbow can appear in the sky above them. Many children wrap their dolls in them or tie them on as a sling to carry a favorite animal or doll around in. They can be used to build forts with the sofa cushions, for a puppet show curtain, and for magic tricks.

948 Playsilk Mini 54 x 54 cm

Age group: of all ages

952 Rare Albion Whatever Happened to the Wizard from Oz?
HOUGHTON BUDD, CHRISTOPHER
0948229179 2005 Paperback
In 1990, American economist, Hugh Rockoff, published his seminal paper, The Wizard of Oz as a Monetary Allegory (Journal of Political Economy Vol. 98 (August 1990), pp. 793-60), in which he explored the monetary meaning of Frank Baum’s famous story. Rare Albion takes this idea further, following the Wizard as he leaves in his balloon and journeys we know not where...

...until he arrives in Rare Albion, the island capital of an imagined land just beyond our normal awareness called the Federated States of Columbia. Here the Wizard reviews his former ways and resolves to make good his previous humbug...

...in Rare Albion he received the name Victor because victory over one's financial circumstances is the chief virtue of that special place. From there, Victor's Blog provides occasional commentary on business, financial and economic affairs with an imaginative thinking unusual in such matters but greatly needed.

HOUGHTON BUDD, CHRISTOPHER

An aphoristic guide to the cardinal ideas of modern economic life, its twenty-two brief chapters survey the major socio-economic questions of our time and point to a fruitful relationship between capitalism and socialism.
This book was written as a 'reader' and based on many years of seminars, it provides an initial excursion into associative economics. Intended to acquaint the layperson with economics in comprehensible language, but also to reset the cast of mind for economics generally, it covers many of the main ideas and concepts that characterise an associative approach.

955 Too Much, Too Soon? Early Learning and the Erosion of Childhood
HOUSE, RICHARD, HOUSE, RICHARD
1907359028 2011 Paperback
"Too Much, Too Soon?" tackles the burning question of how to nurture young children's well being and learning to reverse the erosion of childhood. Children have been speeded up by commercialisation, 'adultification', and the government's 'nappy curriculum' which pushes formal learning too soon. 23 hard hitting articles by educators, researchers, policy makers and parents advocate alternative ways ahead for slowing childhood, better policy making and above all the 'right learning at the right time' in children's growth - when they are ready.

956 Creative Spiritual Research Awakening the Individual Human Spirit
HOUTEN, COENRAAD VAN
1906999287 2011 Paperback
This book... will appeal to those who are in touch with their inner creative impulses, or are motivated but do not know how to begin. The aim is to make this spiritual path possible for every person. It can change the way one relates to life and work - at first simply by an attitude shift, as a questioning, caring human being, taking seriously the spiritual forces that manifest in all outer phenomena.'
How do adults learn and develop? How can adult learning become a living, growing process?
Based on the application of the 'seven life processes', Coenraad van Houten has successfully developed the methods of 'Vocational Learning' (Awakening the Will, 1999) and 'Destiny Learning' (Practising Destiny, 2000). Here, in the culmination of his research trilogy, he presents a new path of adult learning which he calls 'Creative Spiritual Research'. Based on the inner spiritual path of the individual, this is a method that relates to esoteric schooling, thresholds of consciousness and human creativity.
Part One of Creative Spiritual Research features guidelines and exercises for individual practice, whilst Part Two focuses on the general schooling path as a preparation or precondition, opening the inner space needed for research as well as a questioning attitude.
COENRAAD VAN HOUTEN was born in the Netherlands in 1922. After studying Chemistry, Economics and Social Pedagogy, he lived and worked in Holland, Indonesia, Hong Kong and Britain as a manager in business, as a consultant, and as the director of the Centre for Social Development (which he co-founded). He has developed specialist programmes and seminars for educating adults, and presently advises organizations on training programmes. He is the author of Awakening the Will, Practising Destiny, The Threefold Nature of Destiny Learning, and is the co-founder of the New Adult Learning Movement.

957 Threefold Nature of Destiny Learning
HOUTEN, COENRAAD VAN
1902636589 2004 Paperback
'Destiny Learning', a path of adult education conceived and developed by Coenraad van Houten (based on the work of Rudolf Steiner), is here expanded to show a threefold way of working with karma: understanding, transforming and ordering. This threefold approach opens new vistas for healing relationships and conflicts, for developing creative faculties for community building, and for taking initiatives based on freedom. The author widens and deepens his previous work on the theme, showing that learning from destiny, as well as awakening the forces of will, are ongoing processes. He offers practical advice that is directly applicable to everyday life. Although this book can be studied on its own, it is also a development and completion of themes from van Houten's earlier works, Practising Destiny and Awakening the Will. Crucial aspects of the threefold path of 'destiny learning' are here discussed and explained in greater detail. Anyone seeking to take their personal development in hand will find many nuggets of spiritual wisdom, based on a lifetime's work, in this short book.

960 You Wanted to Know What a Waldorf School is... And What It Is Not
HOWARD, ALAN

From the publishers: Through our work in operating the St. George Book Service over the past fourteen years, we have had the opportunity to come into contact with the burgeoning impulse of Waldorf education in the United States and Canada and other English-speaking countries. The questions and dilemmas that teachers and parents have brought to us through the years have revealed to us that, in spite of the many excellent books which are available on Waldorf education, there is still a gap in that there has been no what may be called “heart-to-heart” or shall we say “mind-to-mind” account concerning Waldorf education. For this reason, we asked our respected friend, Alan Howard, who has a broad experience on two continents in the field of Waldorf education, both as a Class Teacher and as an Administrator, to write a brief exposition in the form of a dialogue between an interested parent and a Waldorf school teacher with some years of experience. We hope that this publication will serve to clear up some of the misconceptions that have been brought to our attention in letters, telephone conversations and in-person meetings with those earnestly searching for answers to their questions about Waldorf education.

962 Mesonyms From words that polarize to words that mediate
HOWARD, MICHAEL
1935136089
Michael Howard reminds us that polarization is ubiquitous in our time. In the realm of language, this polarization comes to expression through synonyms and antonyms. But the world is not as black-and-white as it appears. Fortunately, language is rich in words that bridge and mediate between polar extremes. However, these words are not as prominent in our speaking and thinking as synonyms and antonyms, and for this reason, we do not apply them in our practical affairs as fully as we might. By its very title this booklet proposes 'Mesonym' as the name for ‘words in the middle, words that mediate’. A thesaurus of Mesonyms would be a resource for becoming more conscious of this dimension of language, and perhaps open us to less polarized ways of thinking and acting. This booklet offers examples that clarify the nature and practical value of Mesonyms. In itself it is a modest introduction to a larger enterprise but the hope is that it may inspire others to develop it further.

971 More Radiant than the Sun A Handbook for Working with Steiner's Meditations and Exercises
HUGHES, GERTRUDE REIF
1621480356
Rudolf Steiner (1861–1924) spoke many times about the need for more than an intellectual understanding of what he taught as the spiritual path of Anthroposophy, or Spiritual Science, and to this end provided numerous meditations and exercises for his esoteric students during the first three decades of the twentieth century. He always emphasized the need for self-development through the regular practice of meditations and exercises to strengthen and clarify one’s thinking, feeling, and will. Steiner saw such efforts as means not only to develop spiritual sight, but also to protect oneself inwardly from the various dangers inherent to inner development, including egoism and mistaking fantasy for spiritual realities.

This handbook offers verses, exercises, and original instructions from Steiner, along with commentary, suggestions, and context from Gertrude Reif Hughes, a student of Anthroposophy for much of her life. Having meditated Steiner’s verses and their meanings for decades, she describes how the content of these inspiring meditations can create far-reaching effects for one’s life on Earth as well as for one’s eventual life in the spiritual world.

More Radiant than the Sun will be a valuable companion for anyone who is serious about deepening the practice of Anthroposophy.

975 Harmony of the Human Body Musical Principles in Human Physiology
HUSEMANN, ARMIN J.
0863153801 2002 Paperback
Illustrations
An exploration of the cosmic origins of human beings and the evolutionary laws which govern their development. Armin Husemann applies musical principles as a method of gaining insight into the structure of the human body and the forces that work on it. He seeks to utilize our experience of music and explain the physiological and anatomical relationships in the body, as well as illuminate the spiritual influences which determine physical development. Drawing on artistic exercises set out by Rudolf Steiner to develop a better understanding of these influences, the book explores the cosmic origins of human beings and the evolutionary laws which govern their development.

976 Human Hearing and the Reality of Music
HUSEMANN, ARMIN J.
1621480488
usic is not simply something we hear. We experience it and love it; it is a primal human need. If, as the pianist Alfred Brendel put it, that we are able to "take music at its word," we confront questions that also moved the author since his adolescent years: What takes hold of me when I experience music? What reality touches me when music is playing? What happens physiologically in the human body when we experience and make music? The author approaches these questions from three perspectives: first, from his personal experience and active love of music; second, from the physiological perspective; and third, from Rudolf Steiner's spiritual science.

Dr. Husemann—author of The Harmony of the Human Body—shows how hearing is a sensory activity that encompasses far more than processes in the ear and brain, and that the whole body is involved. He also discusses the relationship between music and chemistry. Music is "chemistry from the inside." And finally, from 1915 to 1918, Rudolf Steiner developed a physiology of artistic imagination based on the movement of the cerebrospinal fluid during respiration.

Human Hearing and the Reality of Music is the first attempt to relate Steiner’s spiritual research to the findings of natural scientific research in this area.

978 Anthroposophical Approach to Medicine Vol. 1 An Outline of a Spiritual Scientifically Oriented Medicine: vol. 1
HUSEMANN, FRIEDRICH, WOLFF, OTTO, ET AL, LUBORSKY, P.
0880100311 1983 Hardback
33ill.
Today's medicine is strongly influenced by natural science, which focuses entirely on the material nature of reality. Molecular biology has become the foundation of modern medicine with the result that today's medical industry chases after technology to solve all its problems. In the process it is losing its own essence as it moves into fields increasingly alien to human nature as a whole.

Nevertheless, many doctors are beginning to reexamine this exclusive worldview in favor of a more wholistic approach to healing. To this end, anthroposophical medicine encompasses a wide range of healing modalities, including orthodox, allopathic medicine.

The Anthroposophical Approach to Medicine explores the body's relationship to soul and spirit on the basis of Rudolf Steiner's insights into the activities of the spiritual world. Edited by doctors Friedrich Husemann and Otto Wolff, this book invites us to an in-depth view of a true alternative to materialistically oriented medicine. Chapters include essays on childhood development and diseases; the disorders of old age; neuroses and psychological imbalances; pharmacology; healing plants; biochemistry and pathology; blood-work; and special diagnostic techniques.

This first of a multi-volume series is an invaluable tool to all who want to extend the practice of medicine to include the whole human being.

979 Observation Thinking The Senses
HUTCHINS EILEEN

Most of those who have to do with education today come rather sadly to the conclusion that children are becoming more and more limited in their powers of observation. Within a certain field they are keenly awake, but they are blind and deaf to much that used to delight most of us when we were young. One can be put to shame by a child of six or seven when there is a question of the make of cars or of airplanes, but the average child of today has no interest for trees, flowers or birds, and passes by many aspects of nature with unseeing eyes. . . .

980 Introduction to the Mystery Plays of Rudolf Steiner
HUTCHINS, EILEEN
1855844028
The great importance of these plays is not that we are given many thoughts to further our understanding of anthroposophy, but that we are shown the transforming power of spiritual striving in individual lives, and especially the development in human relationships through an awareness of the forces of destiny. In this respect the Mystery Plays are unique.’ – from the Foreword
In writing and producing his Mystery Plays, Rudolf Steiner offered his spiritual observations and concepts from a fresh, artistic perspective. The dramas appeared in the context of the movement of ‘Theatrical Realism’– during a period when only a handful of dramatists attempted representations of a spiritual world, and these mostly under the guise of fantasy. In introducing spiritual beings to the stage, and showing their connections with human beings, Steiner was pioneering a drama for the future.
Eileen Hutchins’ classic work on Steiner’s Mystery Plays provides a thoughtful commentary that helps us enter the minds and souls of the characters. Through gaining insights into their relationships and inner lives, and the problems and situations with which they are faced, the characters are brought to life. Gradually, we begin to see possible solutions to the complex web of their difficulties.

981 Parzival An Introduction.
HUTCHINS, EILEEN
190699935X 2012 Paperback
‘Eschenbach is the first medieval poet to represent a character who has to win his way through trial and error, from ignorance to wisdom, and from fascination with the world of the senses to recognition of higher realms of experience. In this sense he is representative of modern man.’ - from the Introduction

As a naive and innocent young man, Parzival encounters a group of noble knights in the forest. Overcome by the leading knight’s shining armour, he assumes that the man must be a God. This key turning point in Parzival’s life inspires him to seek to become a knight himself, and immediately he embarks upon a quest to find King Arthur’s court and ultimately the Holy Grail. Through his journeys Parzival is to learn many unexpected lessons, discovering qualities of empathy, humility, compassion and ultimately true and selfless love.

Filled with spiritual wisdom and artistic beauty, Parzival is one of the greatest works of world literature. In this concise, accessible introduction to the central Gail story, Eileen Hutchins describes the key characters, including Parzival’s father Gamuret and mother Herzeleide, and relates the tale in outline. Her classic study also features commentary on the book’s historical background, essays on its significance today, and a comparison with other Grail Romances.

EILEEN HUTCHINS studied at Oxford University and began a career in teaching. Quickly disillusioned with contemporary educational thought and practise, she discovered the pedagogical ideas of Rudolf Steiner. Inspired by the Waldorf approach, she helped found Elmfield School in the West Midlands in 1934. She was a popular lecturer and wrote many articles until her death in 1987.

982 Healing the Skin Holistic Approaches to Treating Skin Conditions - A Practical Guide Based on Anthroposophic Medicine
JACHENS, LUEDER, MEUSS, ANNA
1902636910 2008 Paperback
8 pages colour plates + halftones
Our skin is the visible barrier between what is inside and outside of our bodies. It can respond with sensitivity to tender contact, allowing us to experience pleasure, or, should harmful influences come to bear, it can contract or erupt, causing pain. The increasing prevalence in recent years of various types of skin conditions is an indication of the fact that toxic influences are on the increase. The dermatologist, allergist and physician Lueder Jachens offers wise advice in this helpful and expertly written handbook. His concern is not just to offer understanding of the individual conditions, their causes and how best to treat them, but to give a holistic comprehension of the skin itself - this largest of the human organs - to better enable us to develop health and harmony in the longer term. Jachens' authoritative guide begins with an anatomy of the skin and its relationship to the physical and spiritual levels of existence, and goes on to study various specific conditions and their treatment, including psoriasis, dermatitis, acne, boils, hayfever, alopecia (hair loss), melanoma, abscesses, impetigo, fungal infections, herpes, scabies, head lice, sunburn, and much more.

985 Hermann Gross: Art and Soul
JACKSON, ROBIN
0863156525 Paperback
Hermann Gross (1904-88) would probably be one of the most recognised German Expressionist painters today if it were not for one detail: in 1963, to the bewilderment of his friends, he left the artistic hubs of Paris and Berlin and became an artist-in-residence at a Camphill community in Aberdeen, in the north of Scotland.

This book should bring long-overdue recognition to this most talented of artists. It traces Gross's early life and career as he learned the technical skills of a sculptor, painter, silversmith and stained glass maker under some of the most eminent masters in Europe, including Haustein, Raemisch and Wlérick and, in Paris, Picasso. His work for the Nazi propaganda machine during the war is examined, along with his time in America.

It was during his many years at Camphill, however, that Gross's art matured, and this book includes fifteen colour plates of his most important work. Throughout, he remained true to the German Expressionist roots of communicating a compelling message relevant to contemporary society.

986 Holistic Special Education Camphill Principles and Practice
JACKSON, ROBIN
0863155472 2006 Paperback
16 colour and 12 b/w illustrations
Parents and professionals working with special needs children often face difficult decisions about the child's education. This book puts forward the case for holistic special education, as practised by Camphill Schools. Camphill's holistic approach embraces education and therapy in various forms, all aspects of care - including, for those children receiving residential care, everything from nutrition to bedtime routines - as well as crafts and medical treatments. It emphasizes the importance of the creative arts alongside core aspects of the curriculum such as literacy and maths. It believes that the relationship between the child and their adult co-worker should be one of mutual teaching and learning. It recognizes parents, not as recipients of a service, but as equal and active partners, and strives to develop the physical, mental and spiritual aspects of a child. Written by people involved in holistic special education on a daily basis, this book is an honest, informative manual which will be valued by parents and professional children's workers alike.

JAFFKE, FREYA, BARTON, MATTHEW
0863158323 2011 Paperback

Drawing on many examples, she shows how we can celebrate festivals with children at home and in kindergarten in a meaningful way. Every festival is prefaced with a deeper contemplation for adults, before considering preparations with children, followed by the actual organisation of the festival -- with games, craft activities and decorations, stories, songs, poems and the seasonal nature table.

995 Spirit and Art Pictures of the transformation of consciouness.
JAMES, VAN
088010497X 2001 Paperback
colour plates and over 200 b&w illustrations
“As an art student in the late sixties, I recall how painfully dry and intellectual my art history classes were. I thought to myself, or rather felt to myself, ‘There must be something more’” (Van James).
Artist Van James offers that something more. This is a richly readable and lavishly illustrated text that reveals how, at every stage, human consciousness has evolved through the medium of art. It makes the case for a hidden stream that has put forth art works and art movements throughout history, in an ongoing visible revelation of invisible spiritual currents.

Art, originally a part of the secret Mystery cults of the ancient world, has become an expression of the individual creative intuition. At every stage, Albert Einstein's comment applies: "The most beautiful thing we can experience is the mysterious. It is the source of all true art and science".

996 Drawing with Hand, Head, and Heart A Natural approach to Learning the Art of Drawing.
JAMES, VAN
1621480100 2012 Paperback / softback
"What if imagination and art are not frosting at all, but the fountainhead of human experience?" Rollo May, existential psychologist and author of Love and Will.

Drawing requires effort and will through our hands, sensitivity and passion from our heart, and the thoughtful direction and reflection of our head. Drawing with Hand, Head, and Heart is a practical, hands-on guide to the art of drawing and to the process of visual thinking as a part of our full, rich human intelligence. Collected and developed over many years of classroom experience, the exercises show teachers, parents, and students of all ages how to learn to draw simply and naturally, as a child would learn to draw. Many of the ideas in this book have grown out of the educational methodology of Waldorf education, resulting in a complete drawing curriculum that is in harmony with the stages of learning the child and young adult naturally go through.

In the introduction, Van James - author of Spirit and Art: Pictures of the Transformation of Consciousness - examines contemporary research on brain development and its relationship to learning: How does the process of making pictures contribute to the development of visual thinking? James offers an overview of how young children learn to draw and how to engage their visual intelligence through practical drawing exercises. He then offers examples of form drawing, portraiture, and the art and science of drawing for all ages and ability levels. The author also provides practical examples of geometric and perspective drawing for teachers and adult students. Finally, he summarizes the importance of art and drawing in education and human development, and adds an appendix on therapeutic drawing, a bibliography of resources, and an index. Includes 576 color and black and white illustrations.

Drawing with Hand, Head, and Heart is an invaluable resource for teachers, parents, and visual artists.

997 Dyslexia Learning Disorder or Creative Gift?
JANTZEN, CORNELIA
0863157092 2009 Paperback
b&w illustrations
Dyslexia has long been known as a learning difficulty that primarily affects literacy skills. Increasingly, however, researchers and professionals working with dyslexia suggest that it is less a disorder than a sign of specially gifted people. People with dyslexia often have a highly developed imagination and a unique way of perceiving things. They frequently have above average intelligence and are highly creative, provided they are supported and nurtured by parents and teachers. In this book Cornelia Jantzen explores the basis of this radical viewpoint. Throughout, she provides many practical examples which explore the different aspects of dyslexia, and can give parents and teachers confidence in dealing with the challenges that it presents. This is a helpful and encouraging book for anyone looking for new insights into the enigma of dyslexia.
