902 Spirit of Trees Science Symbiosis and Inspiration
1782504486 3rd Edition Paperback
A holistic appraisal of 24 of the most common, best-loved trees of Europe and North America, presented with stunningly beautiful paintings, drawings and photographs.

Trees are one of Earth's oldest life forms: silent witnesses to human evolution and the passing of time. Many people today take the presence of trees for granted, unaware of their greater significance in Earth's ecology, their medicinal and nutritional properties, or the veneration bestowed on them by ancient peoples.

The Spirit of Trees captures all these elements in a holistic appraisal of Earth's most influential creation, and will captivate readers through the persuasiveness and passion with which the author portrays his subject.

Fred Hageneder explores how trees both empower, and are energized by, the natural world. He details their affiliations with particular planets, and their connection with electrical currents and magnetism. We see how historical factors have affected the natural distribution and development of tree species, and how ancient Wildwood has been absorbed and altered into the landscapes we recognize today.

The second part of the book concentrates on the relationship of humanity and trees, in terms of the trees' natural assets, our cultural interpretations of the forest and particular trees, and the ability of trees to inspire, soothe and sustain humankind.

904 Beyond the Forest The Story of Parsifal and the Grail
1869890736 2000 Paperback
The Grail Quest is an archetypal story of the journey of humanity and of each person. Parsifal's search for wholeness - passed down by generations of storytellers- is re-told vividly here by Kelvin Hall. There is a Parsifal in every one of us as we move from the innocence and naivete of forgetting, through courage and surrender, to love and redemption. Impaired by fear, bewilderment, loss and misunderstanding, we learn to trust the instinct of the heart as well as accepting the wisdom and support of others on the way. This ancient story, told by Wolfram von Eschenbach in the Middle Ages, asks us why we restrain ourselves from asking the compassionate question. It shows how the result is our suffering and alienation, and that by engaging with the suffering of others, we acknowledge our own. This brings forth the possibility for transformation and renewal.

905 And If He Has Not Been Raised... The Stations of Christ's Path to Spirit Man
1902636880 2007 Paperback
3 colour plates
At Passiontide 2004, Judith von Halle received the stigmata - the duplication on her body of the wounds of Christ. Following a period of careful consideration, she eventually decided to share this intimate occurrence with a small group in Berlin in Michaelmas of that year. The phenomenon of the stigmata is usually either seen as a sheer miracle or is simply denied. In contrast, in her first lectures here, she attempts to arrive at a clear understanding of it - based on the spiritual scientific knowledge of Rudolf Steiner - and its significance for one's personal destiny. As a consequence of receiving the stigmata, von Halle began to experience the events of the life of Christ in full, sensory detail. In addition, she has explored these events by means of spiritual-scientific research methods - sometimes referred to as 'continuity of consciousness'. In the further five lectures of this volume, she offers a commentary to the "Mystery of Golgotha", the turning-point in world history. Her intention is to stimulate the reader to reflect patiently and repeatedly upon this great Mystery, and to enter into an ever closer relationship to Christ.

906 Lord's Prayer The Living Word of God
1902636856 2007 Hardback
'The contents of this volume have arisen from my own spiritual experience, and do not represent any kind of hypothesis or speculation, except where I expressly say that I am unable to make any definitive statement about a particular event or set of circumstances...' After she received the stigmata in 2004, Judith von Halle began to experience, very vividly, the events that occurred at the time of Christ. These continuing experiences are not visionary or clairvoyant in nature, but an actual participation, involving all human senses, in the events themselves. To complement this method of witnessing Christ's life, von Halle brings to bear a spiritual-scientific mode of observation - a form of research based on a fully conscious crossing of the spiritual threshold by the human 'I' (or self). Combining the results, she describes in this concise study Christ's presentation of the Lord's Prayer - the archetypal prayer of humanity - to those closest to Him, and the context in which He gave it.
Von Halle considers the historical circumstances at the time of Christ, the preparations He made for passing the Prayer on to others, the Prayer's meaning to the disciples, and how the Prayer itself acts as a mediator between worlds. In addition, she reflects on the doxology of the Lord's Prayer, and its relation to the Sephiroth Tree.

910 Representative of Humanity, The Between Lucifer and Ahriman - The Wooden Model at the Goetheanum
1855842394 2010 Paperback
In conceiving his architectural masterpiece - the Goetheanum in Dornach, Switzerland - Rudolf Steiner designed a large wooden model, featuring three main figures, to be placed in a central position inside the building. Known as 'the Representative of Humanity', this sculpture shows a central, free-standing Christ holding a balance between the beings of Lucifer and Ahriman, who represent polar tendencies of expansion and contraction. On New Year's Eve 1922 the Goetheanum was destroyed by fire, but the model - still in a process of creation and therefore housed in an external studio - miraculously escaped the flames. It remains intact to this day in the second Goetheanum, where it can be viewed by the public.
With numerous full colour photos and illustrations, The Representative of Humanity offers a vivid introduction to this monumental, world-historic artwork. We follow the evolution of the statue through the photographic documentation of many models created in its development: from six smaller versions to a full-size plasticine construction. This latter model - also still on display - offers an impressive insight into the artists' detailed intentions, having been repeatedly revised by Rudolf Steiner. It demonstrates the continual spiritual movement evident in the whole series of small models, and the metamorphic processes which developed over an eight-year period.
The authors offer indications regarding the realm and content out of which the work arose, the environment in which it is situated, and the artists who created it: Rudolf Steiner and the trained sculptress Edith Maryon. They also examine the intentions behind a work of art that addresses the destiny of the whole of mankind.
JOHN WILKES began restoration work on Steiner's and Maryon's sculptural and architectural legacy in 1965. A large number of wax and plasticine models had been deteriorating over the decades. Included was the nine metre high, preparatory plasticine model required for building the wooden sculpture in 1917.
JUDITH VON HALLE attended school in Germany and the USA and subsequently studied architecture. She encountered anthroposophy in 1997, at which time she was running her own architectural practice. She now works principally as a lecturer and author, having some 12 books in print.

911 The Last Night of Ramadan
0880105860 Hardback
The Last Night of Ramadan is for children and their families who wish to understand and learn about Islam and the Muslim culture through Islamic celebrations throughout the year. This book focuses on the Holy Month of Ramadan and the traditions associated with it. The story of the Last Night of Ramadan entertains as it unveils the significance of Ramadan and Eid El Fitr and the traditions associated with them. Children’s imaginative powers can be further enriched when the events unfold through the beautiful medium of a puppet show – something parents can enjoy creating with their children and teachers can create for a primary school context.

It is especially important today for both Muslims and non-Muslims to develop a factual understanding of Islam—knowledge devoid of misconceptions—and to understand the reasons behind Islam’s broad appeal. Written primarily for non-Muslim children and their families, the Enjoy Islam series is also an excellent means of reinforcing what Muslim children may already know about their faith. As children read The Last Night of Ramadan, will sense traditions and moral values that Islam shares with other religions, such as the importance of the family, respect toward older family members, and the special place afforded to mothers.

The illustrations in this unique book for children brings to life this important time of the yearly cycle for Muslims around the world.

913 Till Day You Do Part Or A Question of Light
1906497737 Hardback
Described as an answer to or at least an echo of Samuel Beckett’s Krapp’s Last Tape?, Till Day You Do Part Or A Question of Light, by esteemed Austrian playwright and novelist Peter Handke, is a monologue delivered by the “she” in Beckett’s play. This unnamed female similarly recalls other significant women protagonists in Handke’s own work such as The Left-handed Woman. Handke prefaces the monologue in Till Day You Do Part Or a Question of Light with a description of two stone figures. While the male figure remains “as dead and gone as anyone can,” the female bursts into life, and her monologue gradually focuses on Krapp’s use of pauses and language to dominate the other characters in the Beckett play. Ultimately, however, her complaints and critique of Krapp become a declaration of her love for Krapp or at least an affirmation of their attachment, as the two of them are ultimately bound together, perhaps even inseparable.

914 From Me to We design and build collaborative workplaces
'This book demonstrates that long-term win-win collaboration approaches work. Principals and contractors don't have to end up in conflict or litigation. I would recommend these ideas be adopted by companies eager to improve productivity.' - John Mulcahy, Chairman, Mirvac

'In an industry dominated by conflict and unproductive activity, this book offers a refreshing and practical way for all parties in the building industry to achieve more from their capital and labour inputs. Stephen Hanman and Ian George have shown through application that by introducing trust, respect and meaningful communication into relationships, results improve for all stakeholders. Moreover, the investment required to do the first job carries over to future work, resulting in improved performance with each project. I applaud the efforts of the authors in both creating the environment for their clients to 'do better' in their construction businesses and for sharing their work with the wider business and labour communities. One wonders what benefits could flow to other industries should the broader principles so successfully adopted in this book be applied more widely.' - Terry Henderson, company director and businessman

'This book provides wonderful insights into the way in which economic and social relationships associated with building and construction can be transformed. The participants involved in CGA Bryson projects have experienced considerable benefits in their working and personal lives. There is also evidence of significant economic benefits for all within the project supply chains. In the context of the broader building and construction industry, this account contains lessons which offer solutions for some of the seemingly intractable problems of conflict, waste, poor quality work and alienation that bedevil this industry. We have a lot to learn from these two professionals who are writing about their direct experience in transforming a construction enterprise.' - Professor Tony Dalton, RMIT Australian Housing and Urban Research Institute Research Centre, School of Global, Urban and Social Studies, RMIT University

'In our own research, we have documented in financial terms the benefits of cross-functional, cross-firm collaboration. However, for many executives, building a culture that supports collaboration is not easy. Ian and Stephen not only report on the benefits of collaboration in an industry where such behaviour has not been the norm, but they provide guidelines for building organisations with a culture of collaboration.' - Dr Douglas M Lambert, Fisher College of Business, The Ohio State University, founder of the Supply Chain Management Institute

915 Striving Toward Wholeness
1888602139 Paperback
Barbara Hannah studies the psychic processes that move people to strive for wholeness of personality, an integration of all innate capacities. Since this inner drama manifests itself with special intensity in the lives of creative individuals, she has taken up the biographies and literary productions of five major English novelists—Robert Louis Stevenson, Mary Webb, and Charlotte, Emily, and Anne Bronte—along with one nonliterary artist: Branwell Bronte.

Not only do Stevenson, Webb, and the four Brontes take on fresh, unsuspected dimensions, but the concepts of analytical psychology are also broadened and deepened as Barbara Hannah indicates how contemporary people may gain insight from these examples in their own efforts to strive towards wholeness.

917 Book of Greek and Roman Folktales, Legends and Myths
Captured centaurs and satyrs, talking animals, people who suddenly change sex, men who give birth, the temporarily insane and the permanently thick-witted, delicate sensualists, incompetent seers, a woman who remembers too much, a man who cannot laugh--these are just some of the colorful characters who feature in the unforgettable stories that ancient Greeks and Romans told in their daily lives. Together they created an incredibly rich body of popular oral stories that include, but range well beyond, mythology--from heroic legends, fairy tales, and fables to ghost stories, urban legends, and jokes. This unique anthology presents the largest collection of these tales ever assembled. Featuring nearly four hundred stories in authoritative and highly readable translations, this is the first book to offer a representative selection of the entire range of traditional classical storytelling.

Set mostly in the world of humans, not gods, these stories focus on figures such as lovers, tricksters, philosophers, merchants, rulers, athletes, artists, and soldiers. The narratives range from the well-known--for example, Cupid and Psyche, Diogenes and his lantern, and the tortoise and the hare--to lesser-known tales that deserve wider attention. Entertaining and fascinating, they offer a unique window into the fantasies, anxieties, humor, and passions of the people who told them.

Complete with beautiful illustrations by Glynnis Fawkes, a comprehensive introduction, notes, and more, this one-of-a-kind anthology will delight general readers as well as students of classics, fairy tales, and folklore.

William Hansen, Professor Emeritus of classical studies and folklore at Indiana University, Bloomington, is one of the world's leading authorities on classical folklore. His books include Classical Mythology: A Guide to the Mythical World of the Greeks and Romans, Ariadne's Thread: A Guide to International Tales Found in Classical Literature, and Anthology of Ancient Greek Popular Literature. He lives in Bloomington.

918 My Village
0863156568 2008 Hardback
colour illustrations There is a little village deep in the countryside of Alsace in France. To find it, get off the train at a small station decorated with flowers, and walk down a narrow road between some orchards. In the distance, you'll see the church spire rising above the wheat fields. This is not a made-up village: it really exists. It was the village where Jean-Jacques Waltz, known through his books and drawings as 'Hansi', lived, and it was the place he loved more than any other on earth. At the time he wrote My Village, Alsace was under occupation by Germany following the Franco-Prussian War, and Hansi used his skills as an illustrator to poke gentle fun at the German authorities. The beautiful, colorful and detailed pictures in this book show Alsatian adults and children in their traditional dress, going about their traditional lives in harmony with their surroundings. They are patriotic, kind, and always smiling, despite their difficult circumstances, and they honor the values handed down through the generations. In contrast, the Germans are portrayed as brash and self-indulgent, imposing petty laws on the villagers as well as trying to impose German culture.
Hansi's satire, however, is always humorous, and the book is a joy throughout. Sharp-eyed readers will enjoy spotting the subtle references in his illustrations. The text is suitable for children aged from about eight years old, but will equally be appreciated by adults.

925 Secret Heresy of Hieronymus Bosch
0863151981 1995 Hardback
73 colour illustrations
The bizarre and fantastic paintings of the Dutch artist Hieronymus Bosch have puzzled and intrigued their viewers for centuries. Following years of research which have taken her to every corner of Europe, Lynda Harris offers surprising new insights into Bosch's detailed and cryptic visual fantasies. Drawing on a wide variety of new sources, she deciphers Bosch's symbolism as the hidden expression of his heretical religious beliefs. She argues that Bosch belonged to the Cathar faith, a Manichean religious heresy which was persecuted and driven underground by the Church in the Middle Ages. This fabulously illustrated study reveals that while Bosch was carrying out commissions for his wealthy Catholic patrons, he was all the while coding his own inner heretical convictions in the hidden meanings of his paintings, as a record for posterity of the beliefs of his threatened religious sect.

928 Animals are Our Brothers and Sisters Why Animal Experiments are Misleading and Wrong, Responsible Medicine Based on a Spiritual View of Creation
1902636724 2006 Paperback
'The animals are as much God's children as we are, so they are our brothers and sisters' - St Francis of Assisi. Respected surgeon and medical doctor, Werner Hartinger investigates the claims and counterclaims concerning experimentation on animals. Through meticulous analysis he comes to the conclusion that animal experiments are not only unnecessary, but that the experiments themselves are questionable and lead to meaningless results. The cruelty imposed upon animals is therefore not only gratuitous, he argues, but is unhelpful in the development of good medicine for human beings. Hartinger writes from many years' experience within the medical profession, and with ample scientific data to back his findings. He also tackles the spiritual aspect of this question, inspired by the work of the Austrian philosopher Rudolf Steiner. Painting on a vast canvas, he demonstrates the sibling relationship between humans and animals in the context of cosmic and spiritual evolution. The author gives a commentary on Christian teachings regarding animals, examining the biblical commandments. He also studies the varieties of diseases and their causes, and the hidden aspects of sickness and health.

931 Way of a Child, The
1855843870 2013
Pressured by exams and premature academic demands, surrounded by screens and technology, children today face huge challenges. Childhood itself, it could be said, is facing a crisis. Are children in danger of losing their natural imaginative faculties, which are the source of all creative activity in later life? As a society, are we in danger of losing childhood altogether?
First published in 1940, Harwood’s little book has become a classic introduction to the perennial themes of child development and growth, as well as the basic principles of Steiner/Waldorf education. Harwood (1898-1975) was one of the founding members of the first Steiner school in the English-speaking world, and worked for many years as a teacher. His sensitive awareness and respect for the innate wisdom of childhood shine through his words. Despite the passing of time, the archetypal principles he addresses, as well as the sympathetic picture of childhood he paints, remain highly relevant.
A. C. HARWOOD was educated at Highgate school and Oxford, and was a lifelong friend of the writers Owen Barfield and C. S. Lewis (later becoming one of the trustees of Lewis’s literary estate). Harwood developed a career as a Waldorf school educator, and authored a key book on the subject, The Recovery of Man in Childhood.

933 Marguerite Lundgren Recollections of a Life in Eurythmy
This celebration of the life of Marguerite Lundgren traces her childhood in London through to her founding the London School of Eurythmy and the London Eurythmy Stage Group, together with her insight into the development of eurythmy in the English language. Marguerite had a deep connection with the movement within the sounds of English and English poetry. It was her life's work developing and transforming this into a visible "sounding" in her lessons and performances. For any eurythmist working with eurythmy in English, the section on the "English Sounds" and how to do them can be a great help in finding an approach which transcends mere spelling. As a personality, Marguerite was many-faceted and this comes alive in the many memories of her as a teacher, colleague and friend. These memories tell of a woman who inspired those with whom she worked and lived.

Melissa Harwood grew up in California and came to England in 1970. She studied at the London School of Eurythmy under the leadership of Marguerite Lundgren from 1972 - 1976 where she received her diploma in eurythmy. She joined the London Stage Group after her training and travelled with them performing in the U.K. and abroad. She also taught at the London Eurythmy School for fourteen years. Upon leaving the school and Stage Group she moved to London where she worked in the costume department at the Royal Opera House, London. She now works with eurythmy in organisations and has travelled extensively with this aspect of eurythmy as well as holding special courses for eurythmists. Melissa now lives in the Lake District where she also paints and sculpts.

934 Goetheanum, The A Guided Tour Through the Building, Its Surroundings and Its History
1855842491 2010 Paperback
'I first saw the Goetheanum as a fifteen-year-old through binoculars. I was fascinated and wanted to know more about this incredible building. What am I seeing? Why these forms? What happens in this building?' - Hans Hasler
The Goetheanum in Dornach, Switzerland, was conceived as a visible expression of Rudolf Steiner's spiritual philosophy - a living experience of anthroposophy in the form of art. Whilst Steiner conveyed his ideas and concepts in many books and lectures, the Goetheanum - with its pioneering concrete forms built in the 1920s - is a manifestation of spirituality in architecture, painting and sculpture.
This essential handbook, packed with colour photos and illustrations, gives a broad background to Rudolf Steiner's architectural masterpiece and the work that goes on within it. Hasler explains how the present Goetheanum was built, and describes its recently remodelled great hall and stage, with its painted ceiling and sculpted walls. He details the building's context and landscape design, the other significant structures in its vicinity, and gives a description of the first, wooden, Goetheanum and its destruction by fire.
Today the Goetheanum's remarkable external contours house theatres and studios, laboratories, offices and libraries. Apart from its major stages for drama and eurythmy, it serves as the headquarters of the Anthroposophical Society and the School of Spiritual Science, with the latter's sections for medicine, agriculture, education, the arts, science, and so on. The Goetheanum is also home to numerous conferences, meetings and events. This book provides a marvellous visual and textual guide to one of the most original buildings of our time.
HANS HASLER, born in Switzerland in 1942, studied Slavonic languages, history and education, before becoming a school teacher. He was responsible for social therapy and education for special needs in the Medical Section, and later managed the Goetheanum Building Administration, where he oversaw redesign of the main auditorium. The present book is based on his profound knowledge of the building and its surroundings, as well as his many encounters through leading guided tours over the years.

935 Illuminating Wisdom Words of Wisdom, Works of Art

Illuminating Wisdom brings art and wisdom together in a beautiful celebration of some of the world’s most inspiring philosophical, spiritual and literary quotes.

Approximately 80 quotes have been drawn from some of the great wisdom and literary traditions of East and West, as well as from inspiring people throughout history noted for their practical wisdom. These quotes have been set to exquisite calligraphy by Deirdre Hassed, a leading professional calligrapher, in a range of styles — from the traditional to the contemporary, making use of many and varied techniques such as gilding, collage, work on glass, letterpress and linoprinting. Accompanying each artwork is text by Craig Hassed, an international expert in mindfulness, that provides background on the quote’s author, explores the wisdom tradition to which it belongs, and offers deep insight into the meaning of the quote. The result is a book that is both a work of art and a collection of wisdom that will educate and inspire.

936 Toward Saving the Honeybee Revised and Expanded 2nd Edition
0997756306 2017 2nd Revised
Colour illustrations
"In times of crisis our consciousness soars to new heights, enabling us to rise up to challenges, to take action previously not possible. An impending threat to our wellbeing wakes us up from a comfortable sleep into the reality of potential danger." —Gunther Hauk, cofounder and director of Spikenard Farm honeybee sanctuary

Toward Saving the Honeybee was first published in 2002, four years before the term “Colony collapse disorder” was coined to describe the widespread and growing crisis of honeybee population loss. Yet this decrease in the honeybee population has been ongoing from at least the mid-twentieth century; and as we approach the third decade of the twenty-first century, with each passing year the situation becomes more dire.

With this book Gunther Hauk does not offer a “magic bullet” solution (there is and can be none), but instead provides the straightforward basis for thinking of the honeybee crisis in a different way, which then provides the ground for taking action appropriately.

The sound, holistic approach outlined here is needed now more than ever. Written out of a deep love and concern for the earth and all of creation, Gunther Hauk’s Toward Saving the Honeybee is a light that shows the way forward for farmers, gardeners, hobbyist beekeepers, and anyone concerned about the future of our planet.

This new edition is richly illustrated with color photography and has been revised and expanded by the author.

937 Ecstasies of St. Francis
1584200103 2003 Paperback
In this fascinating account of St Francis' inner life, Haule, a Jungian analyst and student of Hindu Tantra, shows that, like tantrikas, Francis relentlessly pursued the most disturbing experiences in life to achieve higher states of consciousness -- ecstasies in which he stood outside his ordinary self while contemplating and living a higher reality. Francis embraced poverty and sorrows, cared for lepers and outcasts, begged for his bread. Fascinated early on by romantic and troubadour literature, Francis took 'Lady Poverty' as his guide, walking her path to change the world. She demanded that he change his whole nature, and he became the saint known today. Haule tells the story of Francis' life from this point of view and looks at the path of Lady Poverty, trying to understand what Francis meant by 'perfect joy'. He also examines Francis' daily practice of prayer and meditation, the states of consciousness he achieved, and how these bore fruit in his daily life. This is an important book for a deeper understanding of St Francis and his spiritual life.

938 Fundamentals of Artistic Therapy Founded upon Spiritual Science The Nature and Task of Painting Therapy
1855845199 2nd Edition
Includes 50 full-colour plates.
Written by a physician and early pioneer of an artistic therapy inspired by anthroposophy, these fundamental articles based on many years of medical, artistic, therapeutic and anthroposophical experience, first appeared in the journal Natura in the 1940s. Long out of print, they were translated by Vera Taberner from the original German.

The topics include: plant colours and their use, elements of artistic therapy, awakening artistic soul forces through therapy and more.

The author presents a concentrated foundation for the development of artistic therapy and the training of therapists. Although written with the painting therapist in mind, this clearly-formulated book – the fundamental work in its field – will also be of interest to those involved in medical and general therapeutic work, as well as to serious students of anthroposophy. It includes fifty full-colour examples from Hauschka’s course at the School for Artistic Therapy.

MARGARETHE HAUSCHKA (1896-1980) studied Medicine in Munich and worked as a doctor at the Ita Wegman Clinic, where she had responsibility for artistic therapy and helped develop Rhythmical Einreibungen, a method of rhythmical massage. After marrying Rudolf Hauschka, she worked at the Biologischen Hospital in Höllriegelskreuth. From 1950, she devoted herself to course and seminar activity, and in 1962 she founded the School for Artistic Therapy and Massage in Boll, Germany.

1855841177 2008 Paperback
In an Age of mass food production, Hauschka considers one of the most neglected aspects of nutrition -- the quality of food. He discusses aspects of food that can be measured by conventional scientific means, as well those that defy quantification by the usual methods. He relates these findings to a historical survey of food cultivation, preparation and preservation, and to the question of the chemically treated foods of today. Also included are concise dietary suggestions by Dr. Margarethe Hauschka.

940 Nature of Substance, The Spirit and Matter
1855841223 2008 Paperback
Within conventional science, the reductionist, materialist view asserts that matter is solely physical. Without denying the laws of matter, Dr. Hauschka shows the limitations of a science restricted by them, and points to new research which indicates the primal nature of spirit.

This work is the result of decades of experimentation in which Dr. Hauschka came to radical conclusions that suggested potential new directions for science. Avoiding technical terms and academic style, his fascinating study has chapters on plants, animals, oils, proteins, carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals, metals, carbon, oxygen, poisons, high dilutions, and much more.

941 Failure to Connect How Computers Affect Our Children's Minds and What We Can Do About It.
0684855399 1999 Paperback
black & white illustrations
Though most parents of school-age and even preschool children believe that computers are essential to learning, the truth, according to Jane Healy, is that more important educational priorities are being pushed aside in the rush to buy computers and computer related products. Once a bedazzled enthusiast of educational computing, now a troubled sceptic, Healy spent hundreds of hours talking to school administrators, teachers, parents, and students to provide this balanced and thoughtful evaluation of computers in the school and at home. In FAILURE TO CONNECT, she examines the benefits and drawbacks of computer use for children, arguing that time spent on computers is often time stolen from other developmentally important activities such as reading and creative play. Healy also suggests that most schools overlook the most critical technology component: adequate teacher training. FAILURE TO CONNECT also explores the effects computers have on children's health, brain development, creativity and their social and emotional needs.
Based on years of research, FAILURE TO CONNECT is a timely and eye-opening examination of the central questions we must confront as technology increasingly influences the way we educate our children.

942 Slow Parenting Caring for Children with Intention: an inspiring approach from the Nokken Kindergarten
0985482109 2012
"Early childhood happens only once. It is precious. Whatever happens in these first years cannot be repeated in the same way later on. Nokken [the author’s kindergarten in Denmark] recognizes this. This book helps us in honoring and respecting the being of the little child, allowing unhurried time for development, and allowing time to enjoy the gradual and miraculous unfolding of the human being. We can develop new conscious intention in our interaction with our children and one another - at meal times, sleep times, walks in nature - as well as in festival celebrations. This book is a guide to help us discover richness in the daily life we already have by slowing down and allowing ourselves and our children room to breathe and grow. This could be called a handbook for slow growing."
-Nancy Blanning

Helle Heckmann is the founder and Director of Nøkken, a Waldorf daycare centre in Denmark for children aged between 1 and 7. Nøkken has served as an inspiration for Waldorf kindergartens and nurseries worldwide.

This book shares the basic attitudes of the parents, caregivers and teachers who comprise the community at Nokken. An ideal introduction for early childhood centres, homeschoolers, or parents of small children.

943 Thirty-three Meditations
Poet Michael Hedley Burton has written a series of poems that attempt to grasp that illusive experience of selfhood. In the book's foreword he writes that there are two different kinds of self accessible to us, one built up from our earthly experience and the other overshadowing this as a kind of "higher self." The drama of who we are is founded very much on the kind of relationship existing within us between these two selves. The "Thirty-three Meditations" is a deeply Christian study - but not Christian in the sense of allegiance to any fixed form of religion. Here the emphasis is on one's own personal relationship to the divine within. In the final section we are taken into images that Burton received from a study of "The Fifth Gospel" - lectures given in 1913 by Rudolf Steiner. In looking for the essence of selfhood he found himself confronting the one known as Jesus of Nazareth whose destiny it was to sacrifice his earthly ego to become the bearer of the Christ. These are poems that will appeal to anyone who thinks deeply about life and who wants a book that can be kept by the bedside and studied over a period of time, always giving further thoughts. One reader, a psychologist, called it "33 forms of healing medicine for the human ego."

945 Risen Christ and the Etheric Christ, The
1855843919 2013
Delivered more than 60 years ago, the lectures in this booklet demonstrate Alfred Heidenreich’s gift for kindling understanding of the essence of Christianity and the nature and being of Christ. Guided by spiritual science or anthroposophy, as founded by Rudolf Steiner (1861-1925), Heidenreich presents an imaginative and insightful reading of the meaning of Christ’s ‘resurrection body’, addressing the significance of ‘original sin’ and ‘the Fall’, and how they relate to this metaphysical body.
In his second lecture, Heidenreich addresses ‘the greatest mystery of our time’, relating to the true meaning of Christ’s ‘Second Coming’ or ‘appearance’ in the etheric realm of the earth. It is our responsibility, says the author, to bring ‘...the awe and wonder of our thought, the mercy and love of our hearts, the conscientiousness of our deeds’, to help illumine and strengthen this esoteric reality.
ALFRED HEIDENREICH (1898-1969) met and became a follower of the Austrian polymath Rudolf Steiner, after serving in World War I. In 1922 he trained as a priest in the Christian Community, ‘the movement for religious renewal’, founded by Friedrich Rittelmeyer with the support of Rudolf Steiner. As one of the movement’s first leaders, Heidenreich helped develop its work internationally, moving to England in 1929. He was popular as a lecturer and author of several key books on Christianity.

947 Party's Over Oil, War and the Fate of Industrial Societies
1905570007 2005 Paperback
Clearance Sale 50% off (RRP $44.00)
Without oil, what would you do? How would you travel? How would you eat? What would everyday life be like? The world is about to change dramatically and permanently as a result of oil depletion. Within the next few years, the global production of oil will peak. Thereafter, even with a switch to alternative energy sources, industrial societies will have less energy available to do all the things essential to their survival. We are entering a new era as different from the industrial one as the latter was from mediaeval times. "The Party's Over" deals head-on with the imminent decline of cheap oil. It shows how oil and war have been closely related for the past century, and how competition to control oil supplies is likely to lead to new resource wars in the Middle East, Central Asia, and South America.
Tracing the crucial role of fossil fuels in the rise of industrialism, Heinberg discusses the degree to which energy alternatives can compensate for oil, and recommends: a managed transition to a slower-paced, low-energy, sustainable society in the future; a global programme of resource conservation and sharing implemented by the US - the world's foremost oil consumer and the most mightily armed nation in world history - in concert with other countries; and realistic ways for families, communities, nations, and the world to prepare for the coming crisis. A riveting wake-up call that does for oil depletion, what Rachel Carson's "Silent Spring" did for the issue of chemical pollution - i.e. raising to consciousness a previously ignored global problem of immense proportions - "The Party's Over" is essential reading for all those concerned with the future of modern life as we know it.

949 Rhythms of the Week And Other Explorations of Time
0863157920 2011 Paperback
The week has a remarkable rhythm that does not fit exactly with either the month or the year. Yet most of humanity keeps faith with this sevenfold rhythm. Why did the seven-day week triumph over the many other ways that existed of subdividing the month in ancient times? The answer, as Wolfgang Held shows, is rooted in the human being. Just as activity and passivity alternate during the course of a day, the human soul resonates from day to day in seven differing moods. Deepening our understanding of the characteristic weekly rhythm can give us strength and inspiration for the way we live our lives. Why is the present always also informed by the future? When are we best able to discover new questions? Why do we grow a little weary every four hours? How long can we concentrate for? Why does it make a difference whether we think about something in the evening or the morning? Wolfgang Held introduces us to the diverse rhythms at work in our lives: from tiny seconds to the great cosmic divisions of the Platonic year. Just as we have learned to orient ourselves in space, so we can develop our potential through a conscious relationship with time.
This practical and inspirational book contains discussions from two separate German editions, Der siebenfache Flugelschlag der Seele (The Soul's Sevenfold Wingbeat) and Vier Minuten Sternenzeit (Four Minutes of Star Time), offering us fascinating insights into how we can live in harmony with time.

950 Quality of Numbers One to Thirty-one,The
0863158641 2012 Paperback
One sun, two parents, three meals a day, four seasons, five fingers ...every child soon discovers that lots of things in life have an inherent number attached to them. Just as five individual fingers become something much more important and powerful when combined together in a hand, these numbers are often much more than a simple addition of their parts: they are intrinsically connected to the object, expressing a particular quality. In this readable little book, Wolfgang Held explores the fascinating qualities of numbers one to thirty-one. The Pythagorean School in ancient Greece had a saying, 'all is number'. Held reveals the hidden numerical order of our world and our remarkable harmonic relationship with our surroundings.

959 Shakespeare
Without Johann Gottfried Herder (1744-1803), we simply would not understand Shakespeare in the way we do. In fact, much literature and art besides Shakespeare would neither look the same nor be the same without the influence of Herder's "Shakespeare" (1773). One of the most important and original works in the history of literary criticism, this passionate essay pioneered a new, historicist approach to cultural artifacts by arguing that they should be judged not by their conformity to a set of conventions imported from another time and place, but by the effectiveness of their response to their own historical and cultural context. Rejecting the authority of a dominant and stifling French neoclassicism that judged eighteenth-century plays by the criteria of Aristotle, Herder's "Shakespeare" signaled a break with the Enlightenment, the approach of Romanticism, and the arrival of a distinctly modern form of aesthetic appreciation.

963 Childhood A Study of the Growing Child
0880102691 1995 Paperback
Caroline von Heydebrand, one of the original teachers at the first Waldorf school in Stuttgart and a personal student of Rudolf Steiner, was a true "knight of the spirit," a priestess of "becoming," for whom a child's life began not with birth but in the spiritual world. Deeply aware of the spiritual reality of human existence, she was a master teacher whose reverence for and devotion to children allowed her to guard, nourish, and guide their unfolding powers in a healthy, beautiful way with unerring love and delicacy. In this book, the ripe fruit of twenty years of teaching children and studying anthroposophy, Caroline von Heydebrand deals lightly, wisely, and almost aphoristically with many aspects of Waldorf education, drawing both on her own experiences and the experiences of the children she taught. Thus, the book is full of stories, examples, and anecdotes. Starting with a discussion of a child's physical form, she goes on to speak of children's souls, taking as her guides the four temperaments-sanguine, melancholic, choleric, and phlegmatic. She shows how adults-above all, teachers-can benefit from an intimate knowledge of these. Then she moves on to consider the growth of consciousness and the development of moral, imaginative, and other capacities. As she does so, she touches on most of what makes Waldorf education unique among educational philosophies of our time. Throughout, a reader senses her deep love of nature and humanity. This is an excellent book for those wishing to understand Waldorf education from within. The author speaks from deep experience and from firsthand knowledge of Rudolf Steiner's educational philosophy.

969 Earth-Friendly Re-Visioning Science and Spirituality through Aristotle, Thomas Aquinas, and Rudolf Steiner
1584200235 Paperback
Earth-Friendly collects the fruits of a lifetime of study and teaching in search of a holistic, organismic, living science, respectful of the sacredness of nature and the ubiquity of the spirit. As a biology philosopher, Sister Adrian’s first teachers were Aquinas and Aristotle; later she came to know the work of Goethe and Rudolf Steiner.

Earth-Friendly traces the development of Sister Adrian’s conviction that "the spiritual science flowing from the thought of St. Albert and St.Thomas, as developed seven hundred years later by Rudolf Steiner, could recapture the true greatness of the West as it reaches out to the East to create an ‘earth-friendly re-visioning of science and spirituality.' "

“These luminous essays reflect the thought and deep work of a woman whose long and brilliant life has engaged some of the most profound revelations of our time. As mystic-activist, spiritual scientist, and endless enquirer into the workings of the world, she brings fresh and radical perspective that stuns as it awakens the reader. Earth-Friendly is at once an education for the new century and an inspiration for those who would make a difference, and even, a new creation.” —Jean Houston, Ph.D, author of A Mythic Life : Learning to Live our Greater Story

“Earth-Friendly invites us to follow Adrian Hofstetter's explorations of a new kind of science, one rooted in a clear and profound epistemology that allows the wholeness of nature to become visible. These essays let us participate in a personal spiritual journey to overcome the rifts between philosophy, religion, and science that characterized the 20th Century. We can learn much from them.” —Craig Holdrege, author of Genetics and the Manipulation of Life

“May her witness inspire other generations to let a vision of faith open the human dimensions of science, as mentors like Owen Barfield and Rudolph Steiner guide us to a contemporary Thomas Aquinas. The convergences are nearly miraculous but never forced, showing how much a personal search for understanding can realize-for others.” —David B. Burrell, C.S.C., Hesburgh professor of philosophy and theology, University of Notre Dame

971 Thinking Like a Plant A Living Science for Life
1584201436 2013 Paperback
colour illustrations
We often instinctively feel that our lives would be better if we lived closer to nature. In this unique book, Craig Holdrege offers a specific, practical way of taking that step which, he argues, will signficantly benelfit ourselves and our world: starting to think like a plant. Plants are both dynamic and resilient, intimately connected to their environment. If we can slow down, Holdrege explains, study plants carefully and consciously internalise how they live, a transformation will begin inside us. We will become more fluid and dynamic, more strongly embedded in our world, and more sensitive and responsive. These are qualities that we need as a culture and a society if we are to be sustainable. This is a surprisingly practical guide to a new way to relate to our environment.

One of the greatest epics in Western literature, "The Iliad" recounts the story of the Trojan wars. This timeless poem still vividly conveys the horror and heroism of men and gods battling amidst devastation and destruction, as it moves to its tragic conclusion. 981 Iliad
1904633382 2004 Hardback
The Iliad is one of the finest of all the great works that have been handed down to us from Classical Antiquity. Paris, a Trojan prince, having won Helen as his prize for judging a beauty contest between the goddesses Hera, Athena, and Aphrodite, abducted her from her Greek husband Menelaus and transported her to Troy. The Greeks, enraged by this audacity and devastated by the loss of the most beautiful woman in the world, set sail to Troy and began the long siege of the city. The Iliad narrates the events ten years into the war, describing the anger of Achilles, which results in the death of Patroclus and Achilles's mourning of him and avenging of his murder. It has had a far-reaching impact on Western literature and culture, inspiring writers, artists and classical composers across the ages. Even though it was written more than two thousand years ago, The Iliad remains both powerful and enthralling.

985 Rare Albion Whatever Happened to the Wizard from Oz?
0948229179 2005 Paperback
In 1990, American economist, Hugh Rockoff, published his seminal paper, The Wizard of Oz as a Monetary Allegory (Journal of Political Economy Vol. 98 (August 1990), pp. 793-60), in which he explored the monetary meaning of Frank Baum’s famous story. Rare Albion takes this idea further, following the Wizard as he leaves in his balloon and journeys we know not where...

...until he arrives in Rare Albion, the island capital of an imagined land just beyond our normal awareness called the Federated States of Columbia. Here the Wizard reviews his former ways and resolves to make good his previous humbug...

...in Rare Albion he received the name Victor because victory over one's financial circumstances is the chief virtue of that special place. From there, Victor's Blog provides occasional commentary on business, financial and economic affairs with an imaginative thinking unusual in such matters but greatly needed.

"Too Much, Too Soon?" tackles the burning question of how to nurture young children's well being and learning to reverse the erosion of childhood. Children have been speeded up by commercialisation, 'adultification', and the government's 'nappy curriculum' which pushes formal learning too soon. 23 hard hitting articles by educators, researchers, policy makers and parents advocate alternative ways ahead for slowing childhood, better policy making and above all the 'right learning at the right time' in children's growth - when they are ready.

989 Creative Spiritual Research Awakening the Individual Human Spirit
1906999287 2011 Paperback
This book... will appeal to those who are in touch with their inner creative impulses, or are motivated but do not know how to begin. The aim is to make this spiritual path possible for every person. It can change the way one relates to life and work - at first simply by an attitude shift, as a questioning, caring human being, taking seriously the spiritual forces that manifest in all outer phenomena.'
How do adults learn and develop? How can adult learning become a living, growing process?
Based on the application of the 'seven life processes', Coenraad van Houten has successfully developed the methods of 'Vocational Learning' (Awakening the Will, 1999) and 'Destiny Learning' (Practising Destiny, 2000). Here, in the culmination of his research trilogy, he presents a new path of adult learning which he calls 'Creative Spiritual Research'. Based on the inner spiritual path of the individual, this is a method that relates to esoteric schooling, thresholds of consciousness and human creativity.
Part One of Creative Spiritual Research features guidelines and exercises for individual practice, whilst Part Two focuses on the general schooling path as a preparation or precondition, opening the inner space needed for research as well as a questioning attitude.
COENRAAD VAN HOUTEN was born in the Netherlands in 1922. After studying Chemistry, Economics and Social Pedagogy, he lived and worked in Holland, Indonesia, Hong Kong and Britain as a manager in business, as a consultant, and as the director of the Centre for Social Development (which he co-founded). He has developed specialist programmes and seminars for educating adults, and presently advises organizations on training programmes. He is the author of Awakening the Will, Practising Destiny, The Threefold Nature of Destiny Learning, and is the co-founder of the New Adult Learning Movement.

990 Threefold Nature of Destiny Learning
1902636589 2004 Paperback
'Destiny Learning', a path of adult education conceived and developed by Coenraad van Houten (based on the work of Rudolf Steiner), is here expanded to show a threefold way of working with karma: understanding, transforming and ordering. This threefold approach opens new vistas for healing relationships and conflicts, for developing creative faculties for community building, and for taking initiatives based on freedom. The author widens and deepens his previous work on the theme, showing that learning from destiny, as well as awakening the forces of will, are ongoing processes. He offers practical advice that is directly applicable to everyday life. Although this book can be studied on its own, it is also a development and completion of themes from van Houten's earlier works, Practising Destiny and Awakening the Will. Crucial aspects of the threefold path of 'destiny learning' are here discussed and explained in greater detail. Anyone seeking to take their personal development in hand will find many nuggets of spiritual wisdom, based on a lifetime's work, in this short book.

992 You Wanted to Know What a Waldorf School is... And What It Is Not

From the publishers: Through our work in operating the St. George Book Service over the past fourteen years, we have had the opportunity to come into contact with the burgeoning impulse of Waldorf education in the United States and Canada and other English-speaking countries. The questions and dilemmas that teachers and parents have brought to us through the years have revealed to us that, in spite of the many excellent books which are available on Waldorf education, there is still a gap in that there has been no what may be called “heart-to-heart” or shall we say “mind-to-mind” account concerning Waldorf education. For this reason, we asked our respected friend, Alan Howard, who has a broad experience on two continents in the field of Waldorf education, both as a Class Teacher and as an Administrator, to write a brief exposition in the form of a dialogue between an interested parent and a Waldorf school teacher with some years of experience. We hope that this publication will serve to clear up some of the misconceptions that have been brought to our attention in letters, telephone conversations and in-person meetings with those earnestly searching for answers to their questions about Waldorf education.

994 Mesonyms From words that polarize to words that mediate
Michael Howard reminds us that polarization is ubiquitous in our time. In the realm of language, this polarization comes to expression through synonyms and antonyms. But the world is not as black-and-white as it appears. Fortunately, language is rich in words that bridge and mediate between polar extremes. However, these words are not as prominent in our speaking and thinking as synonyms and antonyms, and for this reason, we do not apply them in our practical affairs as fully as we might. By its very title this booklet proposes 'Mesonym' as the name for ‘words in the middle, words that mediate’. A thesaurus of Mesonyms would be a resource for becoming more conscious of this dimension of language, and perhaps open us to less polarized ways of thinking and acting. This booklet offers examples that clarify the nature and practical value of Mesonyms. In itself it is a modest introduction to a larger enterprise but the hope is that it may inspire others to develop it further.
