When we think of rites and rituals, we usually think of something that has to do with a church. But there are various “rituals” that we are all involved in, whether they assume an outward form or not—for example, pre-birth, death, and after-death. There is yet another ritual available to all: the path of attaining spiritual knowledge, which has been called the “reverse ritual” in spiritual science. As Rudolf Steiner describes it, this “ritual of knowledge” is formed by “the free spiritual activity of the human being, in awareness of the God as a spirit.”
Every true ritual involves these four aspects: revelation, offering, transformation (or transubstantiation), and communion. The differences between various rituals involves the order of these four aspects, as well as their forms and purposes. Whereas the sacraments go from revelation to offering to transubstantiation to communion, the ritual of spiritual knowledge moves from communion to transformation, then from offering to revelation.
Steiner’s research and lectures and Benesch’s elucidations provide a detailed comparison of various ritual forms and lead us to a deeper appreciation of the reverse ritual: the ritual of knowledge.
This stimulating collection of writings on spiritual communion of humanity includes two further lectures by Steiner that show how this process can engage our social lives. Also included are two additional essays as appendices: “Sacramental and Spiritual Communion” by Dietrich Asten and “Human Encounters and Karma” by Athys Floride.
The introduction by Christopher Schaefer brings these ideas into focus for modern seekers.
Part One: “The Spiritual Communion of Humanity” (5 lectures from GA 219)
Part Two: “Preparing for the Sixth Epoch”
Part Three: Commentaries by Friedrich Benesch
Appendices: Selections from Dietrich Asten: “Spiritual and Sacramental Communion” & Athys Floride: “Human Encounters and Karma.”
